This study bundle handles the subject of Planning and Time Management. In the first part of this study sheet we take a look at different types of planning, the characteristics of good planning and a step-by-step plan to build up a good planning strategy. In the second part of this study bundle we will focus on time management and more specifically on techniques to counter procrastination. You will notice that some tips are less relevant during the corona measures. So as a compensation we also added tips specifically relevant during Corona times. We kept some of the exercises from the original workshop. This way students can still work on this topic in a practical way. So definitely try to make the exercises you find in this study bundle. If you need additional support doing the exercises, you can always contact us (see point 5) . Good Luck! \nWhat is planning? \nPlanning is a tool that helps you get a grip on your time. By thinking in advance about what you are going to do and when you are going to do it, you increase the chance of achieving your goals effectively and using your time wisely. Moreover, planning can give you peace of mind. Some students have the feeling that they can't see the wood for the trees anymore because of the multitude of tasks and information that comes their way. They do some things but do not work in a goal-oriented way, which ultimately prevents them from getting where they want to be. By arranging your tasks and goals and looking ahead, you create mental capacity for other things (after all, you don’t have to keep all those tasks in your mind anymore, they are on paper) and the possibility to work more purposefully. \nWe distinguish two types of planning: short term planning and long term planning. Below we briefly describe the difference between both and in which situation you should choose each type of planning. \n Short Term Planning \nShort-term planning is planning to achieve short-term goals. By short-term goals we mean goals that take little time to achieve. Just think of preparing your Sociology class for the next day, preparing your Statistics lab (a certain number of exercises), reading a certain chapter in your course of Educational Effectiveness For such purposes you need less time than for example studying the whole course of Educational Effectiveness for the exam. Achieving these short term goals often leads to achieving longer term goals such as passing the exam, obtaining your diploma, finding a nice job later on \nConcrete examples of short-term planning are: \n􀁸 A weekly schedule \n􀁸 A daily schedule \n􀁸 A to do list per day/week \nLong Term Planning \nLong-term planning is planning to achieve long-term goals. Longer-term goals (e.g. passing your exams, course units with hundreds of pages of study, tasks with a deadline at the end of the year... ) require more work and time to achieve. For these goals, it is necessary to look further ahead than just a day or a week. If you start planning only a day or week in advance for such goals, there is a good chance that you will not achieve your goal. \nConcrete examples of long term planning are: \n􀁸 A monthly schedule \n􀁸 A semester planning \n􀁸 An exam schedule \n􀁸 A to do list per month/period/course \n Short Term Planning or Long Term planning? \nWhen do you use short term planning and when is it better to use long term planning? In order to answer this question, it is best to look at the situation you are in and what needs you are experiencing at that moment. \nA short term planning has the advantage that you can plan in more detail, hourly or daily, which makes your planning stricter and therefore more difficult to deviate from. Because every hour/day is fixed, you can less easily postpone your tasks because otherwise your planning will get mixed up.
