\nRoughly 125 members of the Plainview community, six Board members, two administrators, about 25 questions and two or three concrete answers were the result of the Board of Education’s public meeting on the five-school merger study on Monday evening, Feb. 9. \nThe meeting, held in the Pirate Auditorium (Tartan Gym), was opened by Board President Bob Green and Superintendent Richard Alt explaining the history of how the Plainview Board had finally reached the current point. \nAlt said that starting a few years ago the Plainview Board and Creighton Board had discussed sharing portions of teaching schedules, extra-curricular activities and perhaps administrators, which led to expanding discussions with other schools invited as well – leading to the addition of Osmond, Wausa and Bloomfield over the course. \nAfter the Boards began meeting regularly, Northeast Community College and the Nebraska Department of Education were added to the “mix”and the 5-School Study Committee began to take shape, adding sub-committees for investigation of other avenues such as legal, architecture, commerce and investigation (among others.) \nAlt presented a number of slides that showed current enrollment with a historical comparison, showing that Plainview Public Schools had lost about 100 total enrollment through the last number of years. \nHe also showed projections using current class figures progressively moved forward, and also estimated class sizes using historical comparisons to explain his opinion about the \nfuture population of Plainview Public Schools. That information was matched occasionally with the information provided by the Feasibility Study the 5-School group had commissioned. \nFollowing that presentation, Alt explained the “rules” for the discussion, comment and question and answer period that followed: one question per person until everyone had a turn, and one question at a time. \nA number of community members, estimated by the News to be between 25-30, spoke up with comments, opinions and questions about all parts of the merger from the location of the building to expenses to student populations and curriculum. \nA few of those comments and questions were met with applause from the audience members, including one that questioned when the Plainview Board would turn its focus away from the entire group and education in the 5-School area to what the local people desired. \nThat comment sparked information from Board President Bob Green, who presented his opinion on a survey that had been discussed atthe 5-School Committee. Green put forth that it was his opinion was if the 5-School committee did not produce a survey in the next month, the Plainview Board would make their own. \nTwo comments from a different perspective were also offered – including one from a previous resident of a south-central Nebraska district that had merged more than 20 years ago, saying that a merger would not alone deteriorate the involved communities and another comment that there are people locally that are for or“on the fence” about the merger, that \nState bowling time schedule released \nEight defending champions will be looking to retain their titles when the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation State Championship Tournament gets underway this weekend. \nOpening round competition takes place at three Lincoln bowling centerson Saturday, February 14. \nClass A – Sun Valley Lanes, 7:30 a.m. \nClass B – Parkway Lanes, 9 a.m. Class C – Sun Valley Lanes, 3 p.m. Class D – Hollywood Bowl, 9 a.m. \nSunday’s final matches take place in the specially constructed “arenastyle” environment.
