CV and COVER LETTER
EXAMPLE
01 What I do

| | GETTING STARTED
Personally, I find both cover letters and CV’s extremely hard to get right, and I think most people do, so really don’t worry if you’re struggling. For me, I like to follow the concept I’ve named the ‘how hard to blow’ concept. Sounds strange but stay with me! |
| --- | --- |

| HOW HARD TO BLOW | Put in the most simplistic terms, you have to tread a fine line of trying to blow your own trumpet as loud as you can, without becoming extremely annoying, maybe even somewhat pretentious or ‘big headed’. |
| --- | --- |
| If you don’t know what I mean by that, it’s a term coined for someone who overly emphasises how impressive they may be, which some see as a pretty sub optimal personality trait. As such, I personally would avoid doing this. BUT, at the same time you have to get across why you’re better suited to the respective role you’re applying for comparative to the possibly thousands of other applicants your up against through your experience, skill sets and achievements, be it practical or academic. As I said, tricky! | |

| Diving into how I tread this line, I’ll start with the cover letter first and then move onto the CV, however, BIG disclaimer, this is just what I did and what I found worked, so sadly it’s no guarantee that it’ll work for you, or impress your potential employer. You are 1000% in your right to think everything I write is complete rubbish and do your own thing! | DISCLAIMER |
| --- | --- |

| 02 | |
| --- | --- |
| | COVER LETTER |
| | |

| WHAT IS IT? | Firstly, the point of a cover letter. I was always taught it was simply to:
1. Introduce yourself
2. Express your interest in the position, and why
3. Link your skillset /qualifications to the position, thus showing your suitability. |
| --- | --- |

exceeding
one page. It is to compliment the CV which is a much more extensive dive into your history and skillset, whilst this is a short and sweet snapshot needed to persuade/hook the reader in, leading them to believe you could be a good fit for the position.
The bullet points on the previous slide are pretty self-explanatory, and I don’t think need too much clarification/ over complicating.
(Hint: Please don’t over complicate those bits.)
The cover letter isto be completed ina standard letter format, not

| | Don’S RATing | |
| --- | --- | --- |
| | What I have personally liked to do in the past is to try and portray my personality and awareness of my | |
| | position into the letter. At the end of the day, and most importantly, you are going to be someone people | |
| | have to work with every day and WANT to work with every day, WANT to interact with every day, WANT to | |
| | collaborate with closely every day, etc etc. | |
| | If you close your eyes and picture the perfect co-worker, someone you’d really like to work with, you most | |
| | probably don’t want that person to be boring or robotic so to speak, therefore don’t let your letter convey that about yourself. So, be it through humour or trying to convey passion/emotion into the letter, I’ve | |
| | found this to be a really helpful tool and had compliments from it in the past. It makes the letter stand out | |
| | from the crowd more so than others, as cover letters can typically tend to look and feel the same. Though | |
| | like everything this is a line to tread carefully, don’t go overboard as this is still a professional document. | |
| | | |","cbCaieehiqiwTTOd","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieehiqiwTTOd","pdf",3116870,38,"English","# What I do
## How hard to blow
## Cover letter
### What is it?","[{"question":"What is the purpose of a cover letter?","answer":"A cover letter introduces the applicant, expresses interest in the position and explains why, and links skills or qualifications to the role to show suitability."},{"question":"How should applicants balance confidence in a cover letter or CV?","answer":"Use the “how hard to blow” idea: highlight strengths clearly while avoiding becoming annoying, pretentious, or overly self-promotional."},{"question":"What should the cover letter communicate beyond experience?","answer":"It should convey personality and awareness of the position so the reader can imagine wanting to work with the applicant, while still keeping the document professional."}]","PLACEMENT AND GRADUATE - A Guide Into Making an Effective CV & Cover Letter | PDF",1789564850,13]
