It is expected that students are familiar with place value up to the millions place, have some knowledge of comparing numbers, and are knowledgeable about decimals. However, this is not a lesson that focuses on decimals. During this lesson, students will represent numbers to the billions place, acknowledge decimal fractions when reading money amounts, be able to represent numbers in standard, word, and expanded forms through exciting activities. While learning, students will be engaged through games like “Find-aFact,” “Roll, Write, Compare!” and “Order Me Around.” \nNCTM Content Standard: \nNumber and Operations: Understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems. \n● Understand the place-value structure of the base-ten number system and be able to represent and compare whole numbers and decimals. \n● Recognize equivalent representations for the same number and generate them by decomposing and composing numbers. \n● Develop understanding of fractions as parts of unit wholes, as parts ofa collection, as locations on number lines, and as divisions of whole numbers. \nGrade/Level: \nGrades 4 / 5 \nDuration/Length: \n3 sessions, 60 minutes per session \nStudent Outcomes: \nStudents will: \n􀁸 Write and represent the place value locations for whole numbers to the billions by using symbols, words, and models. \n􀁸 Describe, represent, apply, compare, or order the relationships of whole numbers and decimals. \nMaterials and Resources: \nDay 1 \n􀁸 Student resource “Place Value-able Facts, Pre-Assessment”(one for each student) \n􀁸 Teacher resource “Place Value-able Facts, Pre-Assessment Answer Key” \n􀁸 Teacher resource “Picture a Number”(1 Hundred Pennies, 1 Thousand Pennies, 1 Million Stars) \nHow Big Is a Million by Anna Milbourne \nTeacher resource “Fun Fact Cards”(4 sets: thousands, millions, billions, decimals) \no Prepare one large Find a Fact Bag (a container or plastic bag is fine) so students can pull out a Fun Fact Card. Cut out sets of Fun Fact Cards that are appropriately leveled for your class. \n􀁸 Student resource “Place Value Log”(a vertical and horizontal option) \n􀁸 Student resource “Number Line”(enrich activity) \n􀁸 Student resource “Day 1 Assessment” \n􀁸 Teacher resource “Day 1 Assessment Answer Key” \nDay 2 \n􀁸 Student resource “Comparing Log Sheet” \n􀁸 Student resource “Digit Cards” \n􀁸 Student resource “Roll, Write, Compare!”(1 for each pair of students) \n􀁸 Student resource “Spinner Challenge Game”(paper clip, pencil, number cubes or dice) \n􀁸 Fun Fact Cards (from Day 1) \n􀁸 Student resource “Comparing Numbers Assessment” \n􀁸 Teacher resource “Comparing Numbers Assessment Answer Key” \nDay 3 \n􀁸 Student resource “Decimal Place Value Chart-Comparing” \n􀁸 Student resource Fun Fact Cards – Decimals (from Day 1) \n􀁸 Teacher resource “Order Me Around – Rules” \n􀁸 Teacher resource “Order Me Around Numbers” \n􀁸 Student resource “Decimal Place Value Log” \n􀁸 Student resource “Place Value Assessment” \n􀁸 Teacher resource “Place Value Assessment Key” \nDevelopment/Procedures: \nDay 1 \nPre-assessment \n􀁸 Distribute student resource “Place Value-able Facts, Pre-Assessment” to each student. \n􀁸 Students will identify the given place value amount by circling certain digits and writing numbers in standard, word, and expanded forms. An answer key is provided. \nEngagement \n􀁸 Read How Big is a Million by Anna Milbourne or show teacher resource,“Picture a Number” to help students visualize the magnitude of numbers. \nExploration \n􀁸 Ask students if they have ever seen a million of anything. Allow students time to think and share responses. Ask students to close their eyes and visualize a million. How big or small would each item have to be if we wanted a million on our chalkboard? Take a look around the room. Could we get a million of anything to fit on you","cbCaidC0pT6xeOGe","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidC0pT6xeOGe","pdf",720194,41,"English","# Brief Overview\n# NCTM Content Standard\n# Grade/Level and Duration\n# Student Outcomes\n# Materials and Resources\n# Development/Procedures\n## Day 1\n## Day 2\n## Day 3","[{\"question\":\"What grade level and duration does the lesson target?\",\"answer\":\"The lesson targets grades 4/5 and runs for 3 sessions, with 60 minutes per session.\"},{\"question\":\"Which representations of numbers do students practice?\",\"answer\":\"Students write and represent numbers in standard (number) form, word form, and expanded form, supported by logs and activities.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the lesson address decimals?\",\"answer\":\"The lesson acknowledges decimal fractions when reading money amounts and includes a decimal place value chart and decimal-focused Fun Fact Cards, while also emphasizing it is not a decimals-only lesson.\"}]","Place Value-able Facts - Place Value Lesson Plan - Grade 4/5 | PDF",1791799912]
