You might prefer to just dive right in, or you may like to start with the instructions and hints below. \nLEFT SIDE \nBeginning on the LEFT SIDE of the Pie Chart selections you can determine what data will go into your pie. You can select data from all of North America (\"All States\") or one country or any number of specific states. Similarly, you may restrict your pool of data in terms of Species or Habitat. The default will include All Species and All Habitats wherever you do not otherwise specify. \nRIGHT SIDE \nOn the RIGHT SIDE of the Pie Chart selections you decide how you want to see your data divided. You can view your pie sliced by State, Species, or Habitat and you can further specify within those categories. \nNote: You can only view the largest 10 slices. All others will be grouped in \"Other\" and\"Other\" will always be a warm brown colored slice. \nNote: For a simple breakdown of native versus introduced species in any locale or habitat you can select the Species 􀃆 Native vs. Introduced OR for a simple breakdown of crop vs. non-crop you select Habitat 􀃆 Crop vs Non Crop \nNAMING YOUR CHARTS \nInserting titles for your pie chart is a great way to keep track of your explorations! This is also a necessary step for SAVING your charts. Your charts will be saved in cyberspace and connect to your IP address. \nEXTRACTING YOUR PIE CHARTS for PRESENTATIONS \nFor PC – Left click to drag or right click on the chart and select \"copy\" to paste onto Word or PowerPoint or another document. If you right click and \"save\" the chart it will be saved as a png file. You can open this file and re-save it as a jpg for later use. \nFor Mac – To take a \"Screen shot\" of your chart, press Command (⌘)-Shift-4, and then drag the crosshair pointer to select the area. Hold Shift, Option, or the Space bar while you drag to resize the selection area. To cancel, press Escape (esc) before you release the mouse button. \nThis chart will appear, most likely on your desktop, as \"Screenshot\" with a date and time and will be a png file. You can open this and export it as jpg or pdf OR just drag it into another document. \nCOLOR SELECTION \nYou can select among 10 colors for your slices. This is optional. Color selection allows you to create multiple pie charts, all including a particular variable or variables (e.g. your state or your favorite species) marked with the same color(s) each time. In this way you and your audience can easily relate information from all the pie charts. \nNote: Your first chart will come with colors automatically selected. You can use that to model the colors you use on future charts. \nEXAMPLES – a couple of tricky ones \n1.) Let's say you want to find out what the 10 most commonly found North American native species are and on the LEFT you first select All States-All Species-All Habitats and on RIGHT Species 􀃆Native Species. You would get something like this: \nYou see a big section of the pie that represents \"other\" and is composed of all the introduced species. You see the native species as a solid piece \n2.) If, instead, you want to compare the most common among native species, you would have to also select Native on the LEFT side which determines the composition of your chart. \nSo, All States-Native Species-All Habitats and on the RIGHT Species 􀃆 All Species \nNow you see no introduced species and can see more easily how common the natives are relative to each other. \nHappy Explorations! \nThese instructions are a work in progress. Please send your comments, questions, and examples [to ladybug@cornell.edu. Thank you](to ladybug@cornell.edu.
