To do this, writers provide strong reasons, facts, and examples to support what they believe. They use clear language, organized ideas, and convincing details to make their point. Persuasive writing can be found in essays, letters, speeches, commercials, and even social media posts—anywhere someone is trying to change your mind or inspire you to do something! \n2 \n3 \nPERSUASIVE WRITING \nThe Writing Process \nOverview \nThe writing process is a series of steps that writers follow to create strong, organized writing. It starts with planning ideas, then moves to drafting, revising, editing, and finally publishing. Each step helps make writing clearer, more powerful, and ready to share . \nPrewrite \nDraft \nRevise \nEdit \nPublish \nThis is the planning stage. Writers think about their topic, brainstorm ideas, and decide what they want to say. A list, web, or discussion with a peer or teacher can help organizing thoughts before writing. \nDrafting is when writers begin turning ideas into sentences and paragraphs for the first time. It doesn’t have to be perfect. This stage is a chance to get thoughts down on paper and then go back and make them even better later. \nDuring revising, writers make their writing stronger. More details can be added, sentences can be rearranged, and better, more descriptive words can be chosen to make ideas clearer and more interesting for the reader. \nDuring this step, writers fix mistakes in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. This step ensures the writing is correct, polished, and ready to share. \nPublishing is the final stage of the writing process. This is when the finished piece is shared with others by reading it aloud, displaying it, or submitting it for others to enjoy. \n4 \nPERSUASIVE WRITING \nChoosing a Topic \nStudents are full of opinions, and that’s a great thing! Having an opinion means they’ve thought about something and decided what they believe . This is exactly what persuasive writing is about and why teaching students how to write strong persuasive essays can be so much fun! \nTo get them warmed up for persuasive writing, we’re going to start with a fun activity. Pose the following questions . Have students stand on different sides of the room to vote for their preferred choice . After each question, have a few students explain their choice and try to persuade others why their side is the best. \nWhich is better: pizza or tacos? \nWould you rather have a pet dinosaur or a pet robot? \nWhich is better: cake or cookies? Should students get homework? \nWhich is more important: recess or lunch? \nShould students be allowed to use cell phones in school? Would you rather have a pet dragon or a pet unicorn? \nWould it be better to be a fish in the ocean or a bird in the sky? \nWould you rather time travel to the past or time travel to the future? \nWould you rather have super speed or super strength? Should kids get paid for doing chores at home? \nACTIVITY \nStudent Choice Activity \nWhich is better: pizza or tacos? \nWhich is better: cake or cookies? \nWhich is more important: recess or lunch?
