Needs assessments can be very broad, involving shorter timeframes to conduct the assessment, or they can be very granular, taking more time and resources to conduct. It is up to the organization to determine how deep a needs assessment it wants to orchestrate. Let’s begin with some definitions. \nTake a look at the decision tree on the following page. A decision tree is a tool that can help you identify the best course of action and decide how to move forward. This decision tree is a simplified version based on Mager and Pipe’s (1997) Performance Analysis Flow Diagram. \nA recent whitepaper (ATD 2018) identified the points in the illustration below: \nNeed: A need is a gap between the current and desired outcome. \nNeeds Assessment: A needs assessment is a tool used to facilitate decision making, and typically occurs within the analysis phase of instructional design. Needs assessments involve collecting and synthesizing information to appropriately determine whether gaps exist (training or otherwise), which will ultimately identify whether there are training gaps that need to be addressed. If so, you will explore the existing training and resources that may address the identified gaps. Not all problems are training problems (although many are) . \nThe top three challenges related to conducting a needs assessment were: \n1 \nstakeholders who believed \n68% \nof respondents found needs assessments highly effective. \nthey already knew the organizer’s needs \n2 \nextensive time required \n3 \ngetting buyin from others \n56% \nOnly 56 percent of organizations conduct needs assessments \nThat last statistic is not surprising. It seems when organizations are trying to cut costs, L&D takes a hit. And within L&D, needs assessments may be perceived as a costly and unnecessary endeavor. \nL&D professionals really need to achieve buy-in from key stakeholders when it comes to the importance of conducting needs assessments, which is no small task. \nFind more tools at \n[www.td.org/membertools](www.td.org/membertools) \nATD MEMBER-ONLY TOOLS \nPerformance Analysis Flow Diagram \nIdentify the training gap \nNo \nYes \nYes \nNo \nTraining is required \nTraining Options \nMaybe \nNo \nYes \nAlternatives to Training \nProvide feedback on completion of the task \nIs the task completed often? \nProvide opportunities to practice completing the task to achieve mastery \nIs the gap related to knowledge/ skills? \nHas employee performed task previously? \nWithin this guidebook, we will share: \n+ needs assessment benefits \n? needs assessment considerations \n steps for conducting a needs assessment. \nFind more tools at \n[www.td.org/membertools](www.td.org/membertools) \nATD MEMBER-ONLY TOOLS \n+ Needs Assessment Benefits \nScenario: An organization has been training staff on how to use a learning management system (LMS) by having employees log in to the LMS and “poke around.” Project managers are complaining that LMS-related deliverable dates aren’t being adhered to, projects are losing profit, and clients are becoming irate. \nObservation: In this scenario, it is apparent that the current method of training employees on how to use the LMS is not working. Employees may be doing their best to meet the deliverable dates, but because they lack an understanding of how to use the LMS, production is inefficient. \nIn this scenario, a needs assessment would likely inform the organization of the identified training gap and make recommendations for addressing it, which would likely lead to less impact on deliverable dates and increases in profitability and production efficiency. \nHere are some of the primary benefits of conducting a needs assessment: \n! \nInforms de","cbCaibyS6OKt484p","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibyS6OKt484p","pdf",2160140,8,"English","# Overview\n## Definitions and decision tree\n## Needs assessment benefits\n# Job aid and framework\n## Needs assessment considerations","[{\"question\":\"What is a needs assessment, and when does it typically occur?\",\"answer\":\"A needs assessment is a tool that facilitates decision making during the analysis phase of instructional design.
