The NASA scientific and technical information (STI) program plays a key part in helping NASA maintain this important role. \nThe NASA STI program operates under the auspices of the Agency Chief Information Officer. It collects, organizes, provides for archiving, and disseminates NASA’s STI. The NASA STI program provides access to the NTRS Registered and its public interface, the NASA Technical Reports Server, thus providing one of the largest collections of aeronautical and space science STI in the world. Results are published in both non-NASA channels and by NASA in the NASA STI Report Series, which includes the following report types: \n􀁸 TECHNICAL PUBLICATION. Reports of completed research or a major significant phase of research that present the results of NASA Programs and include extensive data or theoretical analysis. Includes compilations of significant scientific and technical data and information deemed to be of continuing reference value. NASA counter-part of peerreviewed formal professional papers but has less stringent limitations on manuscript length and extent of graphic presentations. \n􀁸 TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM. \nScientific and technical findings that are preliminary or of specialized interest, e.g., quick release reports, working papers, and bibliographies that contain minimal annotation. Does not contain extensive analysis. \n􀁸 CONTRACTOR REPORT. Scientific and technical findings by NASA-sponsored contractors and grantees. \n􀁸 CONFERENCE PUBLICATION. \nCollected papers from scientific and technical conferences, symposia, seminars, or other meetings sponsored or \nco-sponsored by NASA. \n􀁸 SPECIAL PUBLICATION. Scientific, technical, or historical information from NASA programs, projects, and missions, often concerned with subjects having substantial public interest. \n􀁸 TECHNICAL TRANSLATION. English-language translations of foreign scientific and technical material pertinent to NASA’s mission. \nSpecialized services also include organizing and publishing research results, distributing specialized research announcements and feeds, providing information desk and personal search support, and enabling data exchange services. \nFor more information about the NASA STI program, see the following: \n􀁸 Access the NASA STI program home page at [https://www.sti.nasa.gov](https://www.sti.nasa.gov) \n􀁸 E-mail your question to [help@sti.nasa.gov](help@sti.nasa.gov) \n􀁸 Phone the NASA STI Information Desk at 757-864-9658 \n􀁸 Write to: \nNASA STI Information Desk \nMail Stop 148 \nNASA Langley Research Center \nHampton, VA 23681-2199 \nNASA/SP-2016-3404 \nNASA \nWork Breakdown Structure (WBS) Handbook \nNational Aeronautics and Space Administration \nJanuary 2018 \nThis handbook is available in electronic form at \n[https://ntrs.nasa.gov](https://ntrs.nasa.gov) \nTABLE OF CONTENTS \nTable of Contents v \nList of Figures and Illustrations vii \nRecord of Revisions viii \nPreface ix \nP.1 Purpose ix \nP.2 Applicability ix \nP.3 References ix \nChapter 1: Introduction 1 \n1.1 Background Information 1 \n1.2 Policy 1 \nChapter 2: WBS Overview 2 \n2.1 Definition 2 \n2.2 WBS Hierarchy 3 \n2.2.1 Establishing and Maintaining WBS Codes in NASA’s Management Systems 5 \n2.2.2 Contract Work Breakdown Structure (CWBS) and CWBS Dictionary 7 \n2.2.3 Work Breakdown Structure Elements by Other Performing Entities 9 \n2.3 Development Guidelines 9 \n2.4 Summary 10 \nChapter 3: WBS Development and Control 11 \n3.1 WBS and the Project Life Cycle 11 \n3.2 WBS Activities and Responsibilities 12 \n3.3 Development Considerations 14 \n3.3.1 Compatibility between ","cbCaiucqWfO1qNPx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiucqWfO1qNPx","pdf",4451492,67,"English","# Table of Contents\n## Chapter 1: Introduction\n## Chapter 2: WBS Overview\n## Chapter 3: WBS Development and Control\n## Chapter 4: WBS Uses\n## Appendix A: Acronym Listing\n## Appendix B: Glossary of Terms\n## Appendix C: Standard Project WBS Level 2 Templates and WBS Dictionary Content Descriptions\n## Appendix D: Standard Data Requirements Document (DRD)\n## Appendix E: Contractor CWBS Example","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of the WBS in NASA project management?\",\"answer\":\"The handbook explains WBS as the structured breakdown of project work, used to support technical management, work identification and assignment, schedule, cost, performance, and risk management.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the handbook recommend developing and controlling a WBS?\",\"answer\":\"It covers development considerations and techniques, including maintaining consistent coding, preparing a WBS dictionary, using templates and checklists, and applying change control to govern updates.\"},{\"question\":\"What common errors should be avoided when developing a WBS?\",\"answer\":\"The handbook lists common development errors such as using an unsuitable former WBS, including non-product elements, creating center breakouts at inappropriate levels, and establishing an incorrect element hierarchy.\"}]","NASA Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Handbook - January 2018 - Purpose, Overview, Development, Uses | PDF",1789178612,23]
