Thank you for joining another Fidelity webinar. Today we're going to cover a topic that we get a lot of questions about every single year. It's on every account statement, and clients are asking to know more about. That's specifically dividends and capital gains. What are they? How do they impact your portfolio? What are some of the good things to know about as you're planning, not just for the rest of the year but for a long-term investment plan? My name is Chase Cotnoir. I help to create content here at Fidelity Investments as a principal digital editor, help with brokerage education, some of the experiences on [Fidelity.com. And joining me today](Fidelity.com. And joining me today)[ ](Fidelity.com. And joining me today)[really is our special guest](really is our special guest), Neal Doyle. Neal is the product leader, squad leader here at Fidelity. He helps with portfolio monitoring, which are a number of products and experiences that really help you online navigate a variety of experiences. And today, specifically, we're talking about the dividends and capital gains distributions experience and what that entails for you here at Fidelity. \nSo what you can expect from us, we're going to talk about, what are dividends? What are they not? What are capital gains? How do you think about those within a portfolio? And from there, the second half of today's conversation is going to be a little bit of a demonstration. We're going to hop into some Fidelity tools, go into some experiences that we have worked very hard, Neal's worked very hard to improve and lead and design to make sure you can efficiently understand what's happening in your portfolio. \nSo with that, we'll get right into today's conversation. And if you have any questions, I should just add real quickly, feel free to add them in the Q&A. We're going to actively monitor that and try to answer your question today as best as possible. So we want to make sure that this isn't complex for anybody, so we want to break down at a high level, what are we talking about when it comes to dividends and capital gains? Well, we're really talking about different ways that people earn returns, OK? \nSo there's really three main categories that we commonly talk about here at Fidelity, which is price appreciation, dividends, and capital gains distributions. Now, price appreciation, you can think about this as, you invest in a stock right, stock ABC. We're going to use a lot of examples in today's conversation. Just think about them as being used for educational purposes and examples only. \nLet's assume you buy a stock for $30 a share. And over time, it goes up in value. That's stock appreciation, right? That's kind of what we want as investors. You take some risk, you buy a thing, you hope it increases in value. That makes sense, right? It's these other two categories we're going to spend a lot of time talking about here today. It's the dividends and the capital gains distributions. So these dividends at a really high level is when a company makes some profits, and they pay it out to you in the form of a distribution. You'll hear that word a lot today, but we just mean a form of payment. \nAnd then the other part is a capital gains distribution. And so you might hear Neal and I use terms like total returns, right? People may have heard of that before here at Fidelity or elsewhere in the investing industry. And you can think about a total return really as the summation or the sum or the total of the price appreciation, if any--hopefully, right--plus dividends or capital gains distribution. \nWhat are you receiving in whole? And this is a very high level way to think about those different cate","cbCaiqgFUCSeUb9A","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqgFUCSeUb9A","pdf",228008,"English","# Dividends and Capital Gains Overview\n## Return categories: price appreciation, dividends, capital gains distributions\n## What dividends are (and common forms)\n## Capital gains distributions and total return\n## Fidelity tools demonstration and Q&A","[{\"question\":\"What are the three main return categories discussed in the webinar?\",\"answer\":\"The webinar groups returns into price appreciation, dividends, and capital gains distributions.
