Podcast\nEpisode 1 – What does UK data protection legislation say about research and personal data\n[00:00:00] Roz Ryan-Mills: Welcome to the University of Leeds Data Protection in Research podcast. I'm Roz Ryan-Mills, an Information Governance Manager at the University of Leeds. In this series, we'll be exploring crucial aspects of data protection in research through five insightful episodes. This podcast is designed primarily for academics at the University of Leeds who handle personal data in their research, and want to ensure compliance with data protection legislation.\nSo join us as we chat with a diverse group of academic and professional staff who are involved in conducting and supporting research that utilizes personal data. In today's inaugural episode, we'll dive into what UK data protection entails regarding the use of personal data in research. We'll be chatting with the Secretariat to unpack the essentials of UK data protection legislation, explore the provisions for using personal data in research, and provide a brief overview of the technical and organisational measures that researchers can implement to safeguard personal data.\nWe'll also be meeting with the research data management team to discuss the differences between data protection and data ethics. Let's get started.\nWelcome to episode one of the data protection in research podcast. I am delighted to be joined by my two esteemed colleagues from the information governance team.\nI'll let them introduce themselves. First up, we've got Rebecca Messinger Clark. Can you tell the listeners a little bit about yourself?\n[00:01:25] Rebecca Messenger-Clark: Yes, thanks Roz. I'm Rebecca, I'm the head of the information governance team and the data protection officer. So, I've worked at the University for a really long time and I've worked in data protection for quite a long time.\nI think like lots of other people working in the area, I've learned on the job. And I think what's really great about doing the job at Leeds is there's lots of expertise. And lots of people with really specialist knowledge. I think it's really. Important that we try and gather all that specialist information together and share it back out across the organization.\n[00:01:55] Roz Ryan-Mills: Yes, absolutely. And that's part of the purpose of this podcast as well, bringing all those different bits of expertise together. Now I'd like to hear from our second guest, Kathie Hunter. Could you introduce yourselves to us, please?\n[00:02:06] Kathie Hunter: Yes, certainly. Hiya. So I work in the information governance team with Rebecca.\nMy role is mainly supporting staff, offering guidance. So I am responsible, for example, for the intranet and the guidance we have on there, but I also do a lot of work supporting staff to use data in a compliant way. So supporting with things like risk assessments, data protection impact assessments, as we call them and also advising on things like, how they can share data with a third party.\nLike Rebecca, I've also been at the University for a really long time, worked in data protection now for a few years. I came originally from educational engagement and I did a lot of work safeguarding children's data. So that's my background.\n[00:02:44] Roz Ryan-Mills: Lovely. Thanks both for introducing yourselves. Now let's dive into the introductory topic of our first podcast.\nWhat does UK data protection legislation say about research and personal data? I want to set the scene. So let's start with the basics. When we say data protection legislation, what are we even referring to? You'll hear the terms GDPR, UK GDPR, and the Data Protection Act thrown around and used interchangeably.\nBut to give you a broad understanding of the legal framework, we first had the original GDPR, which was in piece of EU regulation on information privacy in the EU and the EEA. The main goal of this was to give people rights over how their personal data is used.
