The white paper frames growth through the “Growth Rings” model—Stagnation, Order, Complexity, and Chaos—showing how each environment shapes predictability, change, discomfort, and negative growth. But ever since the onset of COVID-19, there has been a particularly difficult challenge for coaches: today’s environment was created by circumstances never seen before in the modern workplace.
Environments are typically unique to each team. But a global, catastrophic event can thrust masses of people, beyond their control, into the same growth-limiting environment. For example, Ecsell Institute’s COVID-19 research shows that 65% of American workers find it somewhat or very difficult to perform their job effectively, and 61% believe they will not achieve performance expectations this quarter. Because of the data, this paper will touch on the different types of environments that affect growth of individuals and teams, what is now the common environment as a result of the pandemic, and how coaches should respond.

| 65%
somewhat or ver effectively | y difficult to do my | job | 35%
easy o | r average |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 61%
not confident I w expectations for | ill meet performan this quarter | ce | 39%
confident | |

THERE IS POWER IN KNOWING
Ecsell Institute uses a well-researched model depicting how growth is created or destroyed by our environments called the Growth Rings. There are four rings, each representing an environment:
Stagnation, Order, Complexity, and Chaos.
To know the Growth Rings environment in which a person or team resides provides them the ability to adapt or change said environment, which is what ultimately determines coaching effectiveness. Our research shows the positive impacts of t his manifested in higher employee retention, increased engagement, and stronger overall performance. Because of what is occurring in our world right now, there is a dire need to understand all four Growth Ring environments more than ever. Knowing how they work will allow teams to not just survive, but adapt and flourish.
*Ecsell Institute prefers the term “coach” as opposed to “leader.” Coaches must have individuals or teams that report to them, whereas leaders can simply be those with great leadership behaviors yet aren't responsible for a team. Coach will be used as both a noun (a role) and a verb (an activity) in this paper.
WWW . EC S E L L I NST IT UT E . CO M
2
Let’s now apply the Growth Rings to our professional and personal lives ( FYI -they are inextricably linked) through today’s environmental lens and see how individuals and teams are affected.
Before we continue, please know there is a way to measure the Growth Rings environment in which one resides; it is an easy, free assessment, and the link will be provided at the end of this white paper.
ORDER & COMPLEXITY
In order for a person or team to experience growth, they must bein the Complexity ring. Complexity is created from change – when change occurs, outcomes are no longer predictable, and unpredictability is what leads to the discomfort experienced while in Complexity. However, we can't be in Complexity all the time, nor should we strive to be.
Ecsell Institute research shows that high-performing teams, in addition to fostering Complexity, must also experience Order. This ring is defined by understanding environmental inputs that lead to expected, predictable outcomes. We must rest and reset in the Order ring to be prepared for our times in Complexity.
Since a coach's primary role is to create and sustain growth, it is necessary to understand when and how Order and Complexity should be embraced. Furthermore, it's critical that coaches measure what ring they and their team members are in.
But Order and Comp","cbCaidi2bGSfvcZ2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidi2bGSfvcZ2","pdf",6991026,6,"English","# Introduction
# There Is Power in Knowing
# Order & Complexity
# Stagnation & Chaos
## Chaos","[{"question":"What does the Growth Rings model explain in this white paper?","answer":"It explains how different environments create or destroy growth.
