Rutkowski, PMP-AT&T Network Systems \nIntroduction \nToday we live in a world which is characterized by a high degree of competitiveness and a rapidly increasing rate of change. This is especially true within the telecommunications industry where customers expect the highest value and quality, and at the same time demand new products, services, and features to help them meet their customers’ needs in the same competitive, changing environment. In order to satisfy these customer needs today and well into the future, AT&T embarked on a large, complex, high risk project to replace the central control processor in all of its switching systems which comprise the AT&T long distance communication network. The replacement of the processor with a new design which provides additional memory and call handling capacity, however, is much like a heart transplant— there is little or no room for error. The project’s most striking imperative has been “flawless execution,” it had to be right the first time in virtually every respect, On this project, leadership in the application of Quality and especially Risk Management principles has ensured that AT&T’s communication network will not “skip a beat,” \nBackground \nThe 4ESS™ Electronic Switching System is a large, realtime, digital switching system which is currently at the heart ofthe AT&T long distance communication network, A total of 135 of these switching systems, along with their interconnection and access to them, currently comprise the AT&T long distance communication network. Each 4ESS Switch handles up to 107,000 connections with a total of over 700,000 calls per hour, and has been designed to provide the highest quality, ultra-reliable service, Its redundant architecture, along with a sophisticated alternate routing scheme, ensures that customer information—voice, data, or image—arrives at its destination reliably and error-free. In addition to switching customer information from source to destination, the 4ESS Switch provides network-based services such as audio teleconferencing, interactive dialing capabilities by means of touchtone or speech recognition input, advanced 800-Services such as destination routing based on the time of day, high speed \ndata switching, and software-defined virtual networks which provide customers with customized network features. These and similar services which the 4ESS provides have helped shape the way we do business and the way in which we interact with one another today. More importantly, we’ve learned to depend on these services as a way of life and have come to expect both high reliability and quality when we use them on a dayto-day basis, \nProject Scope \nIn order to allow the 4ESS Switch to continue to grow and expand to meet customers’ rapidly changing and ever increasing communication service needs, the central control processor redesign and replacement project was initiated which is now in the midst of the deployment phase. The new processor provides expanded memory, twice the call-handling capacity, and a very high speed interface bus into its internal memory. The expanded memory is used to store additional operational, administrative, and maintenance software — programs which the processor runs to perform its network switching functions. The increased call-handling capacity provides additional speed to both process more calls and handle more complex services and features. The high speed interface bus allows for direct memory access by intelligent, adjunct processors which will share the callhandling workload in the future. These new capabilities are expected to extend the life of the 4ESS Switch into the 21st century. \nThe overall scope of the project, called the lB Processor, involved redesigning the fully duplicated processor hardware, along with its diagnostic and fault recovery soft ware, while at the same time preserving the approximately four million words of call-handling application","cbCaij2ISI1SDgpP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaij2ISI1SDgpP","pdf",36925,"English","# Introduction\n## Background\n## Project Scope\n## Overall Approach\n## Project Management Audits","[{\"question\":\"What does “flawless execution” mean in this project?\",\"answer\":\"It requires the processor replacement to be correct the first time and to have no interruption to service in each 4ESS switch site.\"},{\"question\":\"Why was the iB Processor project considered high risk?\",\"answer\":\"The deployment could impact the AT\\u0026T national communication network and millions of customers, especially during the live installation and retrofit phase.\"},{\"question\":\"How did AT\\u0026T manage quality and risk during deployment?\",\"answer\":\"Through leadership emphasis on Quality and Risk Management, periodic Project Management Audits, Deployment Quality Improvement Teams, and detailed risk management for delivery, installation, and retrofit intervals.\"}]","Leading the Way to Flawless Execution - Project Management Institute 25th Annual Seminar/Symposium | PDF",1789255732]
