As we now know, 2020 has certainly surprised us all!  \nThe Foundation has played a very active role in responding to rapidly shifting needs and priorities by supporting our students and teachers as COVID-19 has dramatically changed the landscape of classroom instruction. The current pandemic has not only forced our schools to remodel educational delivery systems, but it has also highlighted inequities inherent in our society. As both excellence and equity are the tenets of our mission, the Education Foundation is committed to ensuring equal opportunities for success to all. So how have we responded?  \nPreparing book distribution during COVID-19  \nWith help from the community, we immediately responded to unanticipated needs to ensure a continuity of learning for all of our students. With over 60% of LCS students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, this has been especially crucial. Over the past few months, we have:  \n􀁩 provided school supplies required to complete continuity of learning activities to students who lacked those resources at home.  \n􀁩 collected over 8,000 plastic sheets from LCS teachers and businesses to support local PPE efforts before supply chains could catch up to demand.  \n􀁩 provided $1,000 in incentives to help LCS teachers receive Google certification to build their virtual teaching skills as well as their classroom skills.  \n􀁩 purchased 6,000 grade-specific elementary books—from interactive fairy tales to beautifully illustrated and engaging science books —to distribute to 1,200 students who have limited access to books in their homes in order to minimize reading loss and build their home libraries during this extended time away from the classroom.  \n􀁩 helped to secure 300+ face masks for the LCS food distribution team.  \n􀁩 provided art materials to support enrichment activities to over 900 students at the elementary and middle school levels.  \nAll of this was made possible thanks to special donations from organizations such as the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation Youth Philanthropy Award, businesses such as Walmart, and individuals such as Lee and Sharon Ainslie. We don’t know all that lies ahead for the 2020-2021 school year, but we do know that this year will be different from any other. As the LCS Education Foundation celebrates its 35th anniversary and reaches its $1,000,000 mark for Classroom Innovation Grants since the start of this program, our commitment to excellence and equity for all of our students has not changed. With your support, we will continue to respond flexibly and effectively to whatever challenges our school system faces in the months to come.
