Lake superior depth chart pdf. \nLake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes in North America, covering an area of approximately 82,100 square kilometers. It is situated in central North America, straddling the Canada–United States border, and is the northernmost and westernmost of the Great Lakes. The lake is also known as Gichi-gami or Anishinaabewi-gichi-gami by the Ojibwe people, meaning \"great sea\" . Lake Superior is a massive freshwater lake located above Lake Huron. In the 17th century, Jesuit missionaries referred to it as Lac Tracy. After the British took control of the region from the French in the 1760s following their defeat in the French and Indian War, they renamed the lake \"Superior\" due to its large size compared to other lakes on the continent. Lake Superior empties into Lake Huron via the St. Marys River and the Soo Locks (Sault Ste. Marie locks) . It is the largest freshwater lake globally by area and the third-largest in volume, behind Lake Baikal in Siberia and Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. However, while larger than Lake Superior in both surface area and volume, the Caspian Sea is brackish. The lake's deepest point has a maximum depth of 1,333 feet (406 meters), with an average depth of 483 feet (147 meters) . It contains approximately 12,100 cubic kilometers of water. If the entire land mass of North and South America were covered in water to a depth of just over 30 centimeters, there would be enough water from Lake Superior. The shoreline of Lake Superior stretches about 4,387 kilometers (2,726 miles) including islands. The lake boasts a very small ratio of catchment area to surface area indicating minimal terrestrial influence. Lake Superior's water level fluctuates throughout the year, with the highest levels in October and November, and lowest levels in March and April. The average surface elevation is around 600 feet (183 m) above sea level, and the Soo Locks enable ships to bypass the rapids and overcome a 25-foot height difference between Lakes Superior and Huron. The lake's outflow was previously determined by natural hydraulic conveyance through the \nSt. Marys River rapids, but development led to the installation of gates, locks, power canals, and other control structures in support of transportation and hydroelectric power. The Compensating Works regulates water levels, including diversions from the Hudson Bay watershed, according to a regulation plan known as Plan 1977-A. Water levels have fluctuated significantly over time, with record highs reached in October 1985 and new high-water records set in nearly every month in 2019 and 2020 . Conversely, record lows were recorded in March 1926 and January-June 1926 . According to a study by the University of Minnesota Duluth, Lake Superior may have warmed faster than its surrounding area, with summer surface temperatures increasing by around 4.5 °F (2.5 °C) between 1979 and 2007 . Lake Superior, located on the peninsula of Michigan, experienced two consecutive harsh winters from 2013 to 2015, resulting in a record-breaking ice coverage peak of 92.5% on March 6, 2014 . The lake's ice coverage reached an all-time high of 95% in 2019 . Isle Royale, the largest island in Lake Superior, contains numerous lakes and some with islands as well. Other notable islands include Madeline Island in Wisconsin, Michipicoten Island in Ontario, and Grand Island in Michigan. The cities surrounding Lake Superior include Duluth-Superior, Thunder Bay, Marquette, and Sault Ste. Marie. The scenic attractions on the lake include Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Brockway Mountain Drive, Isle Royale National Park, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Pukaskwa National","cbCaic79dY1W4vji","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaic79dY1W4vji","pdf",49955,"English","[{\"question\":\"What is the maximum and average depth of Lake Superior?\",\"answer\":\"The deepest point of Lake Superior reaches 1,333 feet (406 meters), with an average depth of 483 feet (147 meters).\"},{\"question\":\"How does Lake Superior connect to other Great Lakes?\",\"answer\":\"Lake Superior empties into Lake Huron through the St. Marys River and the Soo Locks, which help ships bypass rapids and a 25-foot height difference.\"},{\"question\":\"What factors influence Lake Superior’s water levels and climate effects?\",\"answer\":\"Water levels fluctuate seasonally, and regulation structures (including gates and locks) manage outflows.
