In addition to the factual information, it tells the employer the job interest of the applicant and the applicant’s availability to work. A completed job application demonstrates the applicant’s ability to spell, the ability to follow directions, and the ability to effectively communicate in writing. \nProhibited Questions \nThere are certain items of information that an employer may not request on a job application. \nApplicants are not required to answer questions about race, religion, sex, marital status, children, or financial status. While an employer may ask whether an applicant has ever been convicted crime, employers are prohibited from treating applicants with criminal records differently based on their race or national origin. In general, questions about arrests \nare improper. One exception is a situation where the applicant is applying for a security-sensitive position. Applicants are not required to answer questions about any information designated by HIPAA and FERPA. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a law that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a law that protects the privacy of students’ educational records, such as grades, disciplinary reports, and financial records. A job applicant should never share information protected by HIPAA or FERPA on a job application, letter of application, or resume. \nSignature \nAn applicant’s signature on the job application certifies that all the information on the form is true. It allows a potential employer to verify the truth and gives the employer permission to conduct a background check, a criminal history check, and a reference check. An employer may also receive the results of drug tests. \nRésumé \nA résumé is a document that summarizes the skills, education, experience, and achievements ofa job applicant. It also serves as a screening tool for employers. Résumés are important communication tools in the job-seeking process. A good resume creates a favorable impression of the applicant and helps secure an initial interview. \nFIGURE 1.
