It has been used regularly by consultancies to understand an organisation’s ‘corporate culture’, to design an organisation’s strategic direction and to implement strategic change. Key culturally sensitive elements of the framework include the core idea of the ‘paradigm’ that signifies the particular influences and positioning of different organisational cultures. This provides a strong basis from which institutions can question and challenge normative practices, and determines change. The Cultural Web comprises six elements surrounding the ‘paradigm’, which demonstrates how people within the institution perceive it, ‘the reality’ of the institution (see Johnson and Scholes Figure 1).
Figure \u0013 SEQ Figure \\* ARABIC \\s 1 \u00141\u0015: Cultural Web Source: Johnson and Scholes (1988)
The Cultural Web and TARGETED MPI
The ULANC team has adopted and adapted Johnson and Scholes’ Cultural Web as a framework and tool to aid the development and operationalisation of GEPs for TARGETED-MPI. It will be applied by each partner organisation as they collect data, to help inform context appropriate GEP design and implementation. The framework is a key methodological tool that TARGETED-MPI will use to identify innovative strategies for GE development, and will provide useful baseline data alongside other information collected by the project.
The use of the Cultural Web as an analytic tool has been utilised within research in higher education as a means to explore organisational change (Handscombe, 2003). Articulating the different elements of culture within B&M schools enables institutions to build a cultural profile of their particular organisation, an important aspect of developing, implementing and monitoring bespoke GEPs. By exploring their organisational culture, partner institutions can identify what and who their organisation values and rewards, where power and influence lies and how structures, processes and resources are enabled and for whom.
The adaptation of the Cultural Web is informed by the critical and feminist theoretical underpinnings of TARGETED MPI that are concerned to (i) challenge traditional and taken-for-granted ways of thinking and being, enabling the questioning of dominant and prevalent norms, practices, discourse and institutions, and (ii) consider how gender is experienced through organisational systems, structures, processes and practices. The adaptation therefore provides a critically informed gender lens to the cultural elements, to offer a gender-aware diagnostic tool to identify and map representational issues and to reveal deeper, implicit issues of how inequality is embedded in structures, processes, practices and systems.
