This will likely be the first trip to the computer lab as a class. Time will need to be devoted to transition procedures for going to the computer lab and expectations for preparing for computer use.\nAdditionally, time may need to be given to student account activation and/or introduction to the “VUE” website that Lafayette uses for class communication.\nStandards:\nSOLs\nWG.4 students will locate and analyze physical, economic, and cultural characteristics of world regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, United States and Canada, North Africa and Southwest Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Russia and Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands, and Antarctica.\nWG.1.c students will use maps, globes, satellite images, photographs, or diagrams to develop and refine mental maps of world regions.\nWG.3.c students will apply the concept of region analyzing how cultural characteristic including the world’s major languages, ethnicities, and religions, link or divide regions\nNETS-s\nStandard 1 creativity and standard 3 research and information fluency are addressed in the product stage by offering the choice to create a traditional report or an original game to demonstrate understanding of world regions.\nStandard 2 communication and collaboration is addressed when students work in pairs to develop a knowledge web.\nLearning objectives:\nBy the end of the lesson students will be able to produce the names of the five themes of geography and identify one example of each on a Kahoot quiz.\nBy the end of the unit students will be able to apply the concept of region by writing a report with a partner about a region of their choice graded by the teacher in accordance with the project rubric.\nAssessment\nKahoot quiz- formative\nMigration worksheet- formative\nWritten region report or regions board game- summative\nGeneral plan\nThis lesson will take place in the general education classroom. The teacher should arrange the classroom in pods of 4 desks to facilitate group work and arrange for a laptop cart or if that is not available lab access so that research can take place in the second half of the lesson.\nPart 1: Direct Content instruction\nThe teacher will give direct instruction using the Flocabulary video as a hook (https://vimeo.com/138357965)- The rest of the instruction will use a PowerPoint presentation as visual support for the oral lecture. Instruction will include the 5 themes of geography and special attention to characteristics that define world regions.\nShow the video on the projector and then ask students to list the 5 themes. Play the video again and ask for details about each theme.\nTake Notes- Students will take notes using the Cornell notes template, which has previously been introduced. Students will be expected to pull out key points about the 5 themes of geography and write down questions per the template. The teacher will pause instruction at predetermined stopping points to ask for questions and activate background knowledge (DR-TA). The student portion of this activity, note taking, is done with non-digital technology and does not need an alternate. However, if the PowerPoint fails the teacher can offer the textbook as visual support for those who need it.\nLecture using PowerPoint as visual support clarifying and expanding information in the video on each of the 5 themes. Emphasize key words asking students to repeat them orally. Give special attention to characteristics of a world region.\nDevelop a knowledge web - In pairs students will use their notes to develop a knowledge web thus consolidating and making meaning of the new information. It should be organized in five prongs coming off the geography central hub, one for each of the five themes of geography.
