Students will learn about how the PreK-12 school system works, including issues of policy, technology, and school funding. Students will engage critically with topics such as educational equity, technology in education, policy reforms, and the impact of socioeconomic factors on learning. Through readings, discussions, and projects, students will develop a nuanced understanding of the nature of educational systems and policy in the PK-12 context. Prerequisites: None\nCredit Hours: 3\nCourse Learning Objectives/Outcomes aligned with the Indiana Core Curriculum (ICC) Student Learning Outcomes:\nThis course is part of the University Core Curriculum (UCC). The UCC enables students to:\nRealize their intellectual potential\nAdd breadth and depth to their educational experience\nIncrease their person well-being\nParticipate actively in their communities\nBy the end of the course, students will be able to:\nDescribe how the PK-12 education system is created, governed, and funded;\nIdentify the stakeholders in PK-12 education, their influence, and the ways in which they have agency in the system;\nCritically evaluate current issues in PK-12 education and their implications; and\nEngage in informed discussions about the future of education.\nCourse Rationale:\nEDST 100: Introduction to Education Systems and Policy introduces students to education as a system comprised of the inputs for educating school-aged students at the federal, state, and community levels. Through critical analysis of course readings, discussion, collaborative activities, independent research, and reflective writing, students will discover and evaluate the myriad outcomes that influence the education system through the policy process, legislation, and community engagement. In developing a deeper understanding of the systems and policies informing education development, implementation, assessment, and change, students will be prepared to engage as citizens with an interest in education as a public service.\nRationale for Inclusion as a UCC Course Under Ways of Knowing:\nThe Social and Behavioral Way of Knowing aligns with the content for EDST 100: Introduction to Education Systems and Policy. Education systems are embedded in every community and funded by the community’s tax base. Regardless of one’s phase of life or family status, all citizens in our society have a stake in educational systems. This course supports students in learning about how those systems operate with the aims of providing them with opportunities to understand their evolution and how to engage with and participate in them (ICC SLO 5.1 and 5.6). Education systems also have evolved and changed in scope and aims historically; the course explores both the historical foundations of the education system and how social forces have shaped and changed the nature and purpose of schooling (ICC SLO 5.2). The course will reflect the core pedagogies of Teachers College, specifically focused on discussion-based sessions that ask students to make sense of and synthesize multiple perspectives and sources of evidence to understand a complex system (U.S. K-12 education).\nCourse Content & materials\nCourse Content: List major topics that will be addressed in the course.
