Dontcheva \nCo-Chairs of the Supervisory Committee: \nAffiliate Faculty Michael F. Cohen \nDepartment of Computer Science & Engineering \nProfessor David H. Salesin \nDepartment of Computer Science & Engineering \nThe growth of the World Wide Web has led to a dramatic increase in accessible information. Today, people use the Web for a large variety of activities including travel planning, comparison shopping, entertainment, and research. However, the tools available for collecting, organizing, and sharing Web content have not kept pace with the rapid growth in information. Today people continue to use bookmarks, email, and printers for managing Web content. In this thesis, I present a set of semi-automatic interaction techniques for retrieving content from the Web using the structure of webpages, presentation principles based on layout templates for user-guided organization of content from any number of Web sources, and a new template-based search paradigm for the Web that transforms keyword search into a goal-oriented rich visual experience. To demonstrate the efficacy of these ideas I combined them into a working system and evaluated them through a three-month longitudinal user study. Finally, the ideas that I present in this thesis when popularized by an online Web community would allow average Web users to build a kind of machine-readable “Semantic Web” piece by piece as they go about accomplishing their personal tasks. \nTABLE OF CONTENTS \nPage \nList of Figures . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . iii \nList of Tables . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . v \nChapter 1: Introduction .................................. 1 \nChapter 2: Related work ................................. 5 \n2.1 Ethnographic studies ................................. 5 \n2.2 Information workspaces ................................ 12 \n2.3 Automation on the Web ................................ 16 \n2.4 Discussion ....................................... 20 \nChapter 3: The structure of webpages .......................... 22 \n3.1 Structural differences within a website ........................ 23 \n3.2 Structural changes over time ............................. 25 \n3.3 Discussion ....................................... 42 \nChapter 4: Web Summaries ................................ 43 \n4.1 User experience .................","cbCaitA8EL4p6ZWE","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaitA8EL4p6ZWE","pdf",18381493,131,"English","# Chapter 1: Introduction\n# Chapter 2: Related work\n## 2.1 Ethnographic studies\n## 2.2 Information workspaces\n## 2.3 Automation on the Web\n## 2.4 Discussion\n# Chapter 3: The structure of webpages\n## 3.1 Structural differences within a website\n## 3.2 Structural changes over time\n## 3.3 Discussion\n# Chapter 4: Web Summaries\n## 4.1 User experience\n## 4.2 System description\n## 4.3 Gathering content\n## 4.4 Summary composition\n## 4.5 Layout templates\n## 4.6 Exploratory user study\n## 4.7 Discussion\n# Chapter 5: Relations, cards, and search templates\n## 5.1 User experience\n## 5.2 System overview\n## 5.3 Retrieval using relationships\n## 5.4 Authoring cards\n## 5.5 Template-based search\n## 5.6 Exploratory user study\n## 5.7 Discussion\n# Chapter 6: Evaluation\n## 6.1 The system\n## 6.2 Study methodology\n## 6.3 Results\n## 6.4 Discussion\n# Chapter 7: Conclusions and future work\n## 7.1 Contributions\n## 7.2 Future work\n## 7.3 Summary\n# References","[{\"question\":\"What problem does the dissertation focus on?\",\"answer\":\"It focuses on the gap between the Web’s rapid growth in accessible information and the limited tools people use to collect, organize, and share web content.\"},{\"question\":\"What core interaction techniques are proposed?\",\"answer\":\"The work proposes semi-automatic techniques that retrieve content using webpage structure, enable user-guided organization through layout templates, and use a template-based search paradigm for goal-oriented visual experiences.\"},{\"question\":\"How are the ideas evaluated?\",\"answer\":\"The dissertation integrates the ideas into a working system and evaluates them with a three-month longitudinal user study.\"}]","Interaction Techniques for Automating Collecting and Organizing Personal Web Content - Dissertation | PDF",46]
