productivity and value, and to identify areasfor process improvement.Research work completed to date is based on theimplementation of metrics in a 'standard'software development environment, andfollows either a top-down or bottom-up approach. With the advent of furtherEuropean unity, many companies are producing localised products,ie productswhich are translated and adapted to suit each European country.Metrics systemsneed to be customised to the processes and environment of each company.Thisthesis describes a 12-step process for metrics implementation, using an optimumapproach which is a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches, with aset of applicable metrics, covering the software development process, which can beadapted for any development environment. For the case study,a softwarelocalisation company, the suggested implementation process is followed, andrelevant measures are adapted to suit the different environment, with a particularemphasis on quality metrics. This thesis also demonstrates that a metrics system isitself subject to continuous improvement, and rather than being a once-offimplementation,it is an evolutionary process, changing as the softwaredevelopment process comes under control. \nCONTENTS \n1.PREFAC……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………1 \n2.INTRODUCTION……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………2 \n2.1 Software Managemen………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………4 \n2.2 The Capability Maturity Mode…………………………………………………………………………………………5 \n2.3 Defining Measures To Facilitate Process Improvement………………………………………………10 \n2.4.Summary of Metrics w.r.t the Process Maturity Framework……………………………………1 \n3.METRICS IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS………………………………………………………………………13 \n3.1.
