Unlike autobiography, writers composing works of memoir must ask themselves what to put in as well as what to leave out. In this course, we will read a variety of books and short works from this popular nonfiction genre, which blends narration with reflection. Students will also practice the art of writing about their lives through weekly in-class writing sessions and the creation of a portfolio of three memoir essay assignments. \nLonger description and partial syllabus: \n“The past is radiant. It sheds the light of the lived life.”(Patricia Hampl) \nCourse description: We write memoir, William Zinsser wrote, because it’s how we make sense ofwho we are, who we once were and what elements shaped our development. As Patricia Hampl puts it, we are drawn to the genre because we want to know about ourselves, and the experiences we’ve lived through. Memoir, she tells us, is the intersection of narration and reflection. \nDeriving from the French word for something one wants to keep in mind, memoir is theart of shaping one’s personal history. But it differs from autobiography because it’s not an orderly retelling of facts, nor is it an orderly retelling of all the facts. It is the necessary privileging of one set of events or one slice of an event over others. Annie Dillard tells us that unlike autobiography, memoir asks us what to put in as well as what to leave out. Also, where do you begin? Where is the beginning? Hint: it’s not necessarily the day you were born. \nIn this course, we will master the art of close reading. And we will read as writers do. We will examine works of memoir with an eye toward identifying how the authors approached the art of storytelling and sketching of the characters (yes there are characters, even though memoir is nonfiction) . How did the writer translate lived experience into a piece of writing that is engaging while also personal? \nThrough select readings, we will explore how compelling details and scenes bring the past alive. Good memoir is true but it can read like fiction. And it’s about past events, but writer Sven Birkerts tells us that “memoir begins not with an event but with the intuition of meaning” from these events. What did you learn or have to unlearn? What did this occurrence teach you? And possibly, how can this experience help others? In memoir, something has to be resolved or changed from your first line to your last. \nThis course will be part literature course, part writing workshop. For one assignment, we will include a paired draft exchange (in which students team up with a partner to read each other’s work). We will use prompts in class to generate new writing, and through the major class assignments, we will generate three examples of memoir for our portfolio. \nThe course will have some practical aims. We will explore how we develop strategies to write regularly and keep writing regularly. Last but not least, we will also talk deeply and constructively about revision, one of our most prized writing tools. \nCourse objectives: \n1. To read widely in the genre of memoir (and select samples of other genres) \n2. To learn about the form of memoir with an eye toward cultivating the writing of creative nonfiction as a regular practice \n3. To gain a more comprehensive working knowledge of the aspects, approaches and features of memoir writing \n4. To compile a portfolio of three pieces of creative nonfiction; plus one analysis \nRequirements: Please read the assigned texts fully and deeply; develop a system for taking notes that will facilitate participation in class discussions. Complete the assignments, paying close attention to workshopping your colleagues’ pieces of memoir. Attend class. Submit 3 works of memoir.
