DESCRIPTION  \nHelix Charter High School  \nACADEMIC ADVISOR  \nPurpose Statement:  \nThe job of Academic Advisor is done for the purpose/s of providing specialized clerical/procedural educational guidance services for high school students; providing students with secondary and post-secondary educational programs and career planning, scheduling, class selection, and schedule changes; and providing clerical support to assigned counselors and administrators.  \nThe role of the Academic Advisor is to assist, provide clerical support, schedule, co-present, and co-facilitate under the guidance of the credentialed school counselor. The role and responsibilities of an Academic Advisor are differentiated from a  \ncredentialed school counselor based on the three domains of the counseling profession, Academic, Career and Social/Personal, as outlined in Education Code Sections 49600-49605.  \nThis job reports to Grade Level Principal or Designee  \nEssential Functions  \n● Develop a weekly 20-minute Advisory curriculum focused on student morale and community building, including preparing presentations, ensuring teachers are informed of the plan, balancing class sizes, and ensuring necessary accommodations are provided. Maintain a weekly log of advisory agendas for future use.  \n● Assist in auditing courses within the Student Information System (SIS), updating course lists, and building Teacher Assistant (TA) & Advisory sections in the SIS to ensure accuracy and compliance.  \n● Build and maintain respective Grade Level Team page hosted on Helix website. Creates and maintains Grade Level social media accounts, utilizing an understanding of social media platforms to effectively communicate and engage with the school community.  \n● Assists in organizing and administering examinations (e.g. Advanced Placement Test, Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), ASVAB, CAASPP) for the purpose of monitoring student progress and providing a well managed testing environment. Liaison between military branches and Helix.  \n● Meets with students and parents/guardians for the purpose of making routine scheduling changes and providing guidance to students through the development of academic, college, and career planning. Triages student concerns and refers personal/social issues to the appropriate counselor to ensure that each student receives the most suitable support.  \n● Attends meetings, conferences and training sessions for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving updated information and keeping current with changes and modifications to career and post secondary student opportunities.  \n● Collaborates with and assists counselors for the purpose of creating the yearly master schedule.  \n● Consults with credentialed counselors to use resources (e.g. social worker, probation officer, school resource officer) for the purpose of gathering information and/or direction as may be required.  \n● Maintains a variety of manual and complex electronic documents, files and records for the purpose of documenting activities, providing reliable information, and complying with district, state and federal requirements.  \n● Monitor attendance, progress report grades, transcripts, and standardized test results to provide essential information for educational and career planning, track student progress toward graduation. Evaluate student data, course offerings, credit allocations, academic and career pathway options, and grade distributions to ensure A-G compliance and the successful completion of all program requirements.
