It provides a system of checking in on, and checking upon (through outreach or some other effort), people who have voluntarily self-identified as being at risk and want to be on the Registry. \nDedication \nThe Heat Registry Manual is dedicated to the memory of Richard Howell, a member of the Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre who died in the summer of 2005 from heat-related complications. His death helped spur the work at PARC to create a new Heat Registry and Heat Response model. He is missed, but his memory lives on through this legacy. \nWriting Credits \nThe Heat Registry Manual was compiled and written by Tanya Gulliver, MES, who served as Coordinator for the first two years of the Heat Project. The manual was edited by Joanna Ebbutt, with overall editorial direction provided by Bob Rose, Program Director at the Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre. \nThe compilation and editing of this manual benefited immensely from the critical input, contributions and advice provided by the Peer Outreach Workers – it could not have been done without them: \nEmily Charles-Kinlocke, Kathy Essery, Michael Fitzgerald, Robert Fitzgerald, Rose Goodwin, Jen La Fauci Gordon, Tash Healy, Junior Jr., Paul Koskinen, Laura Lesser, Jack MacDonald, Cheryl Spencer, Hilda Toulouse and Debbie Westfall. \nHeat Project Staff also played a key role in the editing and testing phases of this document: Griffin Epstein, Jane Kali, Andrew Mindszenthy and Lilly Ogle. \nFunding \nThe Heat Registry Project was funded by the City of Toronto (the Shelter, Support and Housing Administration and the Public Health Department), the Knowledge Mobilization Unit at York University and the Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre. Additional in-kind contributions are listed in the Acknowledgements. \nTable of Contents \nDefinition ………………………………………………………………………………………… 6 \nIntroduction ……………………………………………………………………………………… 6 \nOverview ………………………………………………………………………………………… 6 \nUnderstanding Extreme Hot Weather …………………………………………………………7 \nRisk Factors Explained ………………………………………………………………………… 8 \n• Seniors/Elderly ………………………………………………………………………….. 8 \n• Infants under One Year Old……………………………………………………………. 9 \n• Homeless People ………………………………………………………………………. 9 \n• People Living in Marginal Housing Situations ………………………………………. 9 \n• Socially Isolated …………………………………………………………………………10 \n• Ill Health ………………………………………………………………………………… 10 \n• Addictions ………………………………………………………………………………. 10 \n• Mental Illness ……………………………………………………………………………10 \nToronto’s Heat Health Alert System …………………………………………………………. 11 \n• Heat Response ………………………………………………………………………… 11 \n• The Toronto Hot Weather Response Plan ………………………………………… 11 \nPrevention/Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery ………………………… 12 \n• Prevention/Mitigation …………………………………………………………………. 12 \n• Preparedness …………………………………………………………………………. 12 \n• Response ……………………………………………………………………………… 13 \n• Recovery ………………………………………………………………………………. 13 \nParticipatory Research Design ……………………………………………………………… 13 \n• Education ……………………………………………………………………………… 14 \n• Terminology …………………………………………………………………………… 14 \n• Two Types of Heat Alert ………………………………………………………………15 \n• Risk Groups …………………………………………………………………………… 15 \n• Medications …………………………………………………………………………… 15 \n• Heath-Related Illnesses – Warning Signs and Actions to Take ………………… 16 \nThe Parkdale Community …………………………………………………………………… 19 \nThe Heat Registry Pilot ………………………………………………………………………20 \n• History …………………………………………………………………………………. 20 \n• Profile of Sistering ……………………………………………………………………. 21 \n• Profile of the Parkdale Activity – Recreation Centre ……………………………... 22 \nPilot Model Development ……………………………………………………………………..23 \n• Summary ………………………………………………………………………………23 \no 2008 Model ……………………………………………………………………23 \no 2009 Model ……………………………","cbCaimtdBJOoZuRx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimtdBJOoZuRx","pdf",2448765,"English","# Definition\n# Introduction\n# Overview\n# Understanding Extreme Hot Weather\n## Risk Factors Explained\n## Toronto’s Heat Health Alert System\n## Prevention/Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery\n# Participatory Research Design\n# The Parkdale Community\n# The Heat Registry Pilot\n## Pilot Model Development\n## Partnerships – Heat Registry Working Groups and Heat Safety Networks\n## Heat Preparedness Checklist for Agency Partners\n# Peer Involvement\n# Questionnaire & Risk Assessment\n# Quick Heat Assessment Tool (The QHA Tool)\n# Working Practices: Heat Response Outreach\n# Outreach Safety Protocols\n# Administrative Tools","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of the Heat Registry?\",\"answer\":\"The Heat Registry tracks and actively monitors people who may be at risk from extreme heat, using regularly updated documentation and outreach to check in on their safety.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the manual approach risk factors for different groups?\",\"answer\":\"It provides risk factors explained by population groups such as seniors/elderly, infants under one year old, homeless people, those in marginal housing, socially isolated individuals, and people with ill health, addictions, or mental illness.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the manual cover regarding Toronto’s heat response system?\",\"answer\":\"It describes Toronto’s Heat Health Alert System, including heat response and the Toronto Hot Weather Response Plan, and then details prevention/mitigation through preparedness, response, and recovery.\"}]","HEAT REGISTRY MANUAL - Dedicated memory and risk monitoring for extreme heat | PDF",1790259561,31]
