Children and young people eat much of their food each weekday at school. Good nutrition affects students’ behaviour, learning, concentration and energy, as well as their physical health. When students eat a nutritious diet, they find it easier to learn.\nTeachers report improvements in students’ attendance, attention, behaviour and levels of concentration in schools where healthy eating is accepted practice.\nPurpose\nThis Healthy Food and Drink Guidance – Schools (Guidance) helps your school develop a policy to promote and provide healthy foods and drinks. Establishing and following this policy shows your commitment to improving the wellbeing of students, staff and the school community.\nThe Guidance supports school boards to invest in wellbeing. Having a school policy sends a consistent message that the whole school is practising nutrition education as part of the curriculum. It is about creating supportive environments for children and young people where healthy choices are easy.\nThis Guidance enables children and young people to:\naccess healthy foods and drinks at school\ndevelop healthy food and drink preferences\nlearn to make positive choices about foods and drinks.\nScope\nThe Guidance applies to:\nall foods and drinks provided by or available to buy in a primary school, kura, secondary school or wharekura\nfood for special occasions or celebrations\nfree or charitable food provided to schools, kura and wharekura\ngifts of food or drink to students\nexternal suppliers providing food in schools.\nThe Guidance excludes:\nfoods and drinks that students and staff bring to school to eat or drink.\nPrinciples\nThe pri","cbCaigjsp5GDvlOG","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigjsp5GDvlOG","docx",334621,19,"English","# Contents\n## Purpose\n## Scope\n## Principles\n## Developing a school policy\n## Classifying foods and drinks\n## Health Star Rating\n## Nutrient criteria tables\n## Useful definitions\n## Source material","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of Healthy Food and Drink Guidance – Schools?\",\"answer\":\"It helps schools develop a policy to promote and provide healthy foods and drinks, demonstrating commitment to students’, staff, and community wellbeing and consistent nutrition education.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the guidance cover and exclude?\",\"answer\":\"It applies to foods and drinks provided by or available to buy in schools and certain free/charitable or supplier-provided items, while excluding food and drinks students and staff bring from home.\"},{\"question\":\"What principles guide healthy food choices in schools?\",\"answer\":\"Schools should offer varied foods from four food groups, prepare foods with minimal saturated fat, salt, and added sugar, avoid deep-fried foods, and avoid confectionery such as sweets and chocolate.\"}]","Healthy Food and Drink Guidance - Schools - Healthy eating is important | DOCX",7]
