However, they cannot make  \nadditional contributions to the account ifthey are no longer covered under a qualifiedhigh deductible health plan.  \n## What happens when an account holder turns65?\n\nIf they enroll in Social Security they automati -callyenroll for Medicare Part A. Enrollment inMedicare makes the account holder nolonger eligible to contribute to their HSA. Theycan still use the funds to pay for medical ex -penses. At age 65, if the account holder with -draws HSA funds for ineligible expenses, theywill pay taxes but no penalty. If they do notenroll in Medicare they can still contribute totheir HSA.  \nA parent can allow a child to stay on thefamily insurance until the age of 26. Can theparent use the HSA money to pay for medicalexpenses for that child?  \nHSA dollars can be spent on the accountholder’s spouse and any people claimed asdependents on the account holder’s taxes.
