School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential.” \nAccording to the Oklahoma State Statute Title 70 Section 1-116, a school nurse is defined as “‘a registered nurse, licensed by the Oklahoma State Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education, and is certified the same as a teacher by the State Board of Education. Provided, that any person who is employed as a full-time school nurse in any school district in Oklahoma who is not registered on the effective date of this act may continue to serve in the same capacity; however, such person shall, under rules adopted by the State Board of Education, attend classes in nursing and prepare to become registered.” \nFor information regarding School Nurse Certification in Oklahoma, consult the Oklahoma State Department of Education. For additional resources on school health, guidelines, and state regulations, please visit the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s website. \nIn its position statement on school health teams, NASN clarifies the role of Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) or Assistive Personnel (AP): “UAP/AP are school staff members without healthcare licenses. They may serve as paraprofessionals, health aides, nursing assistants, health clerks, or teacher aides (Bobo, 2018) . In accordance with state Nurse Practice Acts and under appropriate training and supervision, school nurses may delegate tasks to UAP/AP, such as providing first aid, conducting health screenings, maintaining health records, performing non-complex procedures, and supporting health office operations.
