So did Daniel Weiss, the new presidentof the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who laterin the issue talks about quitting a good job andsleeping on a friend’s floor while he went back toschool for a PhD. And so did American studiesprofessor Richard Longstreth when he took upa scholarly interest in a subject that was barelyrecognized by other academics. \nLeaps make for good stories. What goes upmust come down, and every time—whetherwe’re on the street or flipping the channels onTV—there is something that compels us to pausefor a moment to see whether they land on theirfeet. If they do, great. If not, also great. It almostdoesn’t matter. Bystanders get to live throughthe leap, if only for an instant. And the personmaking the leap is doing what they must. \nWe hadn’t planned for this issue to revolvearound the subject, but it does seem fitting. Theunwrapping of a new year is prime time forleaps—whether it’s a divergence or a decisionto stay the course, even if the future is murky.Maybe in perusing these pages you’ll catch thememory of your own leaps. Maybe you’ll beinspired to take a new one. Or maybe, moresimply, you’ll be moved by the courage and heartof the people in these stories and feelgood seeingthem stick the landing. \nDanny Freedman, BA’01ma naging editor \nFROM THE EDITOR \ntop Women’s basketballstandout and WNBA \nprospect Jonquel Jonesleft American studiesprofessor RichardLongstreth right DanielWeiss, BA’79, president ofNew York’s MetropolitanMuseum of Art \ngw magazine . com / 3 \nPOSTMARKS \n# FANCY FOOTWORK\n\nThe cover of the fall2015 issue \n\n| I picked up a copy of your fall GW Magazine, andIhave to tell you, whoever did the cover—that isa brilliant, eye-catching piece of art direction. \u003Cbr>You should submit this cover for magazine awards for 2015 for artdirection.
