Introduction \n1.1. The University of New South Wales Bengaluru (UNSW Bengaluru) is committed to fostering a fair, transparent, and accountable academic and administrative environment in which all students are treated with dignity and respect. Recognising that grievances may arise in the course of academic, administrative, or campus life, UNSW Bengaluru has established a structured Grievance Redressal Policy to ensure that concerns are addressed promptly, impartially, and effectively. This policy reflects UNSW Bengaluru’s commitment to natural justice, due process, and institutional accountability. \n1.2. This policy is framed in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Redressal of Grievances of Students) Regulations, 2023 (UGC Regulations), and is also designed to meet the expectations of the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA) under the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standard) 2021, as well as TEQSA’s Statement of Regulatory Expectations: Student Grievance and complaint mechanisms. UNSW Bengaluru shall ensure that its grievance mechanisms are aligned with the regulatory framework prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and other applicable statutory bodies, and that students have a transparent, fair, culturally safe, trauma-informed where appropriate, timebound, and accessible system capable of resolving grievances related to any aspect of a student’s experience with UNSW Bengaluru, its agents, or related parties. \n1.3. The purpose of this Grievance Redressal Policy is to provide a clear and effective mechanism for students to raise grievances related to academic, non-academic, administrative, financial, or service-related matters where they are unable to be resolved directly with the person or area responsible. The objectives of the policy are to: \na) create a safe and accessible platform for students to voice concerns without fear of retaliation \nb) ensure fair, impartial, and timely resolution of grievances \nc) promote transparency and accountability in institutional processes \nd) use grievance data constructively to strengthen policies, systems, and the overall student experience. \n1.4. In the first instance UNSW Bengaluru encourages local resolution where appropriate and possible in the interest of timely resolution of grievances and for the maintenance of positive environment before a Student Grievance Redressal Committee (SGRC) process. \n1.5. General enquiries, requests for information or the provision of feedback will not usually be considered a grievance. Upon receipt, the grievance will be acknowledged by the SGRC and triaged to determine: \na) whether it is an enquiry, feedback, or a grievance suitable for early resolution, or a grievance requiring the management of the SGRC, \nb) whether there is sufficient evidence available to warrant SGRC management, \nc) whether another specialist process is required (for example, misconduct, safety, discrimination, academic integrity, critical incident), \nd) whether interim safety or welfare measures should be considered, \ne) whether there are any conflicts of interest requiring alternative decision makers. \n1.6. Grievances typically fall into two classes: \n• minor issues that are suitable to be addressed informally and usually resolved easily (e.g. by a discussion with local staff, clarification of amisunderstanding etc.); and \n• those that involve a formal process for resolution (such grievances are typically known as a ‘complaint’ or a ‘formal complaint’, to distinguish them from matters that are resolved informally) . These formal Grievances or Complaints may require an SGRC process. \n1.7. UNSW Bengaluru will ensure the formality and intensity of the grievance handling response is proportionate to the issue. Minor service concerns will ordinarily be managed through early resolution unless escalation is required. Serious matters will be escalated promptly to appropriate processes. \n1.8.
