The content topics focus on key concepts taught in high-school level science courses.  \nOn the GED Science Test, these content topics provide context for measuring mastery of Science Practices.  \nThe GED Science Test questions focus on two themes:  \n• Human Health and Living Systems  \n• Energy and Related Systems  \nFocusing Themes in Science  \nHuman Health and Living Systems relate to material that is vital for the health and safety of all living things on Earth.  \nTopics on the GED test related to Human Health and Living Systems include the physical body, heredity, and the mechanisms for how the human body works on chemical and physical levels.  \nEnergy and Related Systems relate to fundamental parts of the universe.  \nTopics on the GED test related to Energy and Related Systems include sources of energy, Earth’s geochemical systems, and the structure and organization of the cosmos.  \nMastering GED Science Passages  \nDon’t try to memorize every high school science concept. You will likely have to answer some questions that focus on one specific theory or conclusion and some questions that focus on comparing all of the theories or conclusions.  \nTo answer questions that involve multiple findings, conclusions, or theories:  \n• Identify relevant information based on the question stem.  \n• Look up information; don’t try to rely on your memory.  \nssg 1  \nMixed Practice  \nDissolved carbon dioxide gas (CO2) creates carbonic acid in ocean water. Rising ocean acidity levels may harm marine life. For example, high acid levels may cause hearing loss. Scientists conducted an investigation to study the effect of increased acidity on fish hearing.  \nA group of fertilized fish eggs from the same parents were divided into four different aquariums, each with different pressure of CO2. One tank contained the normal atmospheric conditions of 390 microatmospheres of CO2.  \nssg 1  \nMixed Practice  \nThe other tanks contained 600, 700, and 900 microatmospheres of CO2, respectively. The same number of eggs was placed into each aquarium. The fish’s position was recorded every 5 seconds for 2 minutes.
