It guides creation of the title page, core concept, genre, target audience, and player progression, then expands into gameplay, mechanics, objectives, mission/challenge and puzzle structures. It further covers physics, interactions, combat modeling, economy, screen flow, options, saving and replay, cheats, story and characters, world and levels, interface and controls, audio and help, AI systems, and the key technical requirements for hardware, engine, networking, and art assets.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/","Template",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/general/","General",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/game-design-document-outline-game-design-blueprint/165890/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/game-design-document-outline-game-design-blueprint/165890.png","ImageObject",442,249,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Connor ","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document","2026-09-27","2026-08-31",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",5,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What is the purpose of a game design document?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"It acts as the blueprint from which a game is built, ensuring every necessary detail for implementation is captured and clearly defined.","Answer",{"name":66,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":67},"Which core sections describe player experience and game rules?",{"text":68,"@type":64},"The outline covers game flow, gameplay progression, mission/challenge and puzzle structures, objectives, play flow, and the full mechanics and physics model.",{"name":70,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":71},"What technical information should the document include?",{"text":72,"@type":64},"It specifies target hardware, development hardware and software including the game engine, network requirements, and key game art assets with their intended style.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":32,"og:type":75,"og:title":10,"og:site_name":45,"og:description":12},"article",{"robots":77,"canonical":32},"index,follow",{"doc_id":79,"site_id":7},165890,1788178172,{"code":4,"msg":82,"data":83},"success",[84,89,94,99,104,109,114,119,123],{"id":85,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":86,"show_sort_weight":87,"slug":88},11,"Presentations",90,"presentations",{"id":90,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":91,"show_sort_weight":92,"slug":93},12,"Resumes",80,"resumes",{"id":95,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":96,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},14,"Invoices",70,"invoices",{"id":100,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":101,"show_sort_weight":102,"slug":103},15,"Posters",60,"posters",{"id":105,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":106,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":108},16,"Social Media",50,"social-media",{"id":110,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":111,"show_sort_weight":112,"slug":113},17,"Forms",40,"forms",{"id":115,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":116,"show_sort_weight":117,"slug":118},18,"Letters",30,"letters",{"id":120,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":55,"slug":122},21,"Paper Templates","papers-templates",{"id":124,"doc_module":22,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":29,"show_sort_weight":4,"slug":125},158,"general-158",{"code":4,"msg":82,"data":127},{"doc_id":79,"user_id":128,"nickname":42,"user_avatar":129,"doc_module":22,"category_id":124,"category_name":29,"doc_title":10,"doc_description":12,"doc_content":130,"file_id":131,"file_url":132,"file_type":133,"file_size":134,"view_count":55,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":22,"is_downloadable":22,"audit_status":22,"page_count":26,"language":135,"language_code":8,"site_id":7,"html_lang":8,"table_of_contents":136,"faqs":137,"seo_title":138,"seo_description":12,"update_tm":80,"read_time":22},687207022233,"https://ap-avatar.wpscdn.com/davatar_155a257f0dc6eb9ab79c44ca47cae57d","Game Design Document Outline\nA game design document is the blueprint from which a game is to be built. As such, every single detail necessary to build the game should be addressed. The larger the team and the longer the design and development cycle, the more critical is the need. For your purpose, the intent is to capture as much as possible of your design. I want you to think big…bigger than what you are able to develop. I also want you to be clear about what the software delivers and what the design entails. My recommendation is that you define the ultimate game and then clarify what it is that you have developed. If you are finding it too difficult to do that, you may produce too documents.\nTitle Page\nGame Name – Perhaps also add a subtitle or high concept sentence.\nGame Overview\nGame Concept\nGenre\nTarget Audience\nGame Flow Summary – How does the player move through the game. Both through framing interface and the game itself.\nLook and Feel – What is the basic look and feel of the game? What is the visual style?\nGameplay and Mechanics\nGameplay\nGame Progression\nMission/challenge Structure\nPuzzle Structure\nObjectives – What are the objectives of the game?\nPlay Flow – How does the game flow for the game player\nMechanics – What are the rules to the game, both implicit and explicit. This is the model of the universe that the game works under. Think of it as a simulation of a world, how do all the pieces interact? This actually can be a very large section.\nPhysics – How does the physical universe work?\nMovement in the game\nObjects – how to pick them up and move them\nActions, including whatever switches and buttons are used, interacting with objects, and what means of communication are used\nCombat – If there is combat or even conflict, how is this specifically modeled?\nEconomy – What is the economy of the game? How does it work?\nScreen Flow -- A graphical description of how each screen is related to every other and a description of the purpose of each screen.\nGame Options – What are the options and how do they affect game play and mechanics?\nReplaying and Saving\nCheats and Easter Eggs\nStory, Setting and Character\nStory and Narrative – Includes back story, plot elements, game progression, and cut scenes. Cut scenes descriptions include the actors, the setting, and the storyboard or script.\nGame World\nGeneral look and feel of world\nAreas, including the general description and physical characteristics as well as how it relates to the rest of the world (what levels use it, how it connects to other areas)\nCharacters. Each character should include the back story, personality, appearance, animations, abilities, relevance to the story and relationship to other characters\nLevels\nLevels. Each level should include a synopsis, the required introductory material (and how it is provided), the objectives, and the details of what happens in the level. Depending on the game, this may include the physical description of the map, the critical path that the player needs to take, and what encounters are important or incidental.\nTraining Level\nInterface\nVisual System. If you have a HUD, what is on it? What menus are you displaying? What is the camera model?\nControl System – How does the game player control the game? What are the specific commands?\nAudio, music, sound effects\nHelp System\nArtificial Intelligence\nOpponent and Enemy AI – The active opponent that plays against the game player and therefore requires strategic decision making\nNon-combat and Friendly Characters\nSupport AI -- Player and Collision Detection, Pathfinding\nTechnical\nTarget Hardware\nDevelopment hardware and software, including Game Engine\nNetwork requirements\nGame Art – Key assets, how they are being developed. Intended style.","cbCaiuY9RUUY9gtU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuY9RUUY9gtU","docx",14875,"English","# Game Overview\n## Game Concept\n## Genre and Target Audience\n## Game Flow Summary\n## Look and Feel\n# Gameplay and Mechanics\n## Gameplay and Progression\n## Mission/Challenge and Puzzle Structure\n## Objectives and Play Flow\n## Mechanics, Physics, and Interactions\n## Combat and Economy\n## Screen Flow and Game Options\n## Replaying and Saving\n## Cheats and Easter Eggs\n# Story, Setting, and Character\n## Story and Narrative\n## Game World and Areas\n## Characters\n# Levels\n## Level Synopses and Objectives\n## Training Level\n## Areas and Map Details\n# Interface and Systems\n## Visual System and HUD\n## Control System\n## Audio and Help System\n## Artificial Intelligence\n## Opponent and Support AI\n# Technical\n## Target Hardware\n## Development Tools and Game Engine\n## Network Requirements\n## Game Art and Asset Development","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of a game design document?\",\"answer\":\"It acts as the blueprint from which a game is built, ensuring every necessary detail for implementation is captured and clearly defined.\"},{\"question\":\"Which core sections describe player experience and game rules?\",\"answer\":\"The outline covers game flow, gameplay progression, mission/challenge and puzzle structures, objectives, play flow, and the full mechanics and physics model.\"},{\"question\":\"What technical information should the document include?\",\"answer\":\"It specifies target hardware, development hardware and software including the game engine, network requirements, and key game art assets with their intended style.\"}]","Game Design Document Outline - Game Design Blueprint | DOCX"]
