Based on the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), eligible students are awarded an allocation which may be earned through part-time employment in FWS approved positions either on or off-campus. The Department of Education pays a portion of the student’s wages while the employer pays the other portion. The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity for employment arranged around class schedules. \nStudents awarded FWS must actively accept the award at Hokie SPA by the date indicated in the award notice or the award will be cancelled. Visit the FWS links for more information: \n[http://www.finaid.vt.edu/types_of_aid/fws/index.html](http://www.finaid.vt.edu/types_of_aid/fws/index.html) \nWORK STUDY SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES \n• Keep track of student earnings on Banner. If student‘s funds are running low, please contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss options available. For any additional FWS questions, please contact the Financial Aid Office. \n• Supervisors should have a job description on file (to include department name, name of supervisor, job title, job description, skills required, pay rate and position duties) . \n• Verify completion of all new-hire paperwork before student starts work and that the student is entered as a FWS student in Banner. \n• Supervisor should verify student has FWS before hiring by viewing RJASEAR. \n• Make sure student turns in hours worked and is paid at least once per month. \n• Remove job postings from HOKIES4HIRE when job is filled. \nWORK STUDY STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES \n• Students should take their job seriously. Supervisors, click the link below for instructions on how to post a job on the Hokies4Hire website: \n[http://www.finaid.vt.edu/types_of_aid/fws/index.html](http://www.finaid.vt.edu/types_of_aid/fws/index.html) \nSupervisors can verify students have been awarded FWS by viewing RJASEAR on Banner. \nDepartments use their FWS position number when creating the students’ position in Banner. The standard new-hire paperwork must be processed before the student can begin working. \nThis includes: \n• If required for your area, the Background Check Form \n• Selective Service Form (Males Only) \n• I9 Employment Verification Form \n• W4 – Federal Tax Form \n• VA4-State Tax Form \nMore information on the hiring process can be found at the Human Resource website: \n[http://www.hr.vt.edu/](http://www.hr.vt.edu/) \nSTUDENT RATE OF PAY \nPay for a FWS student must be the minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour. The average rate of pay is $8.50 . Departments should establish wage rates upon student work experience, amount of responsibility, level of detail and confidentiality. \nFAQs \n• Can students continue to work after their FWS funding runs out? \nNot as a Work-Study student, however, the student can be switched to a wage student position if approved by your area. \n• Can a FWS student be fired? \nYes, they can be dismissed from a FWS job like any other type of job.
