It explains GD&T’s purpose in describing parts’ form, fit, and function using international symbols, reducing translation errors and improving clarity for manufacturers and customers. The course objectives cover core concepts such as features vs. datums, the Datum Reference Frame (DRF), and the difference between GD&T and traditional tolerancing. It also outlines tolerance categories and foundational tolerance types (e.g., straightness, flatness, circularity, cylindricity, profile, angularity, perpendicularity, parallelism).",{"@graph":63,"@context":118},[64,80,101],{"@type":65,"itemListElement":66},"BreadcrumbList",[67,71,74,77],{"item":68,"name":69,"@type":70,"position":9},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":72,"name":10,"@type":70,"position":73},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/",2,{"item":75,"name":11,"@type":70,"position":76},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/presentations/",3,{"item":78,"name":59,"@type":70,"position":79},"https://docshare.wps.com/template/fundamentals-of-gdt-introduction-and-gdt-process/573289/",4,{"url":78,"name":59,"@type":81,"image":82,"author":87,"headline":59,"publisher":90,"fileFormat":93,"inLanguage":57,"description":61,"dateModified":94,"datePublished":95,"encodingFormat":93,"isAccessibleForFree":96,"interactionStatistic":97},"DigitalDocument",{"url":83,"@type":84,"width":85,"height":86},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/fundamentals-of-gdt-introduction-and-gdt-process/573289.png","ImageObject",442,249,{"name":88,"@type":89},"awa","Person",{"url":68,"name":91,"@type":92},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-18","2026-10-14",true,{"@type":98,"interactionType":99,"userInteractionCount":73},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":100},"ViewAction",{"@type":102,"mainEntity":103},"FAQPage",[104,110,114],{"name":105,"@type":106,"acceptedAnswer":107},"What is GD&T and why is it used?","Question",{"text":108,"@type":109},"GD&T is a standardized way to specify engineering design and drawing requirements with emphasis on the actual function and relationships of part features. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) provides a set of standardized symbols to describe parts in a way that is meaningful to manufacturers and customers around the world. This course will provide some general information about GD&T. At the end of this course, you will be able to meet the objectives outlined below. \nObjectives \n• Define GD&T. \n• Describe the scope of GD&T standards. \n• Distinguish between a feature and a datum. \n• Distinguish between GD&T and traditional tolerancing. \n• Define the Datum Reference Frame (DRF) . \n• Describe how the DRF and the part are related. \n• List the major categories of geometric tolerances. \n• Explain the straightness tolerance. \n• Define the flatness tolerance. \n• Explain the circularity tolerance. \n• Define the cylindricity tolerance. \n• Explain the profile of a line tolerance. \n• Describe the profile of a surface tolerance. \n• Explain the angularity tolerance. \n• Define the perpendicularity tolerance. \n• Explain the parallelism tolerance. \n• Describe the position tolerance. \n• Explain the concentricity tolerance. \n• Define the symmetry tolerance. \n• Explain the circular runout tolerance. \n• Describe the total runout tolerance. \n• List the material conditions modifiers. \n• Explain how bonus tolerance is applied to a hole. \n• List the contents of the feature control frame. \n• Describe the advantages of GD&T. \nSECTION \nTHE GD&T PROCESS \nObjectives \n• Define GD&T \n• Describe the scope of GD&T standards \n• Understand when and why GD&T is used \n• Understand commonly used GD&T symbols & terms \n• Distinguish between a feature and a datum. \n• Distinguish between GD&T and traditional coordinate tolerancing. \n• Define the Datum Reference Frame (DRF) . \n• Describe how the DRF and the part are related. \nWhat is GD&T \nParts manufactured in a shop must meet specific design requirements shown on engineering drawings. GD&T is a way of specifying engineering design and drawing requirements with particular attention to actual function and relationship of the part features. The best method for describing how the parts should fit together and how they function should be one that is understood by people in all stages of the process. GD&T can be thought of asan engineering design drawing language and a functional production and inspection technique. It aids manufacturers in sophisticated engineering designs as well as meeting demands for more completeness, uniformity, and clarity. \nThis unique system uses standard, international symbols to describe parts in a language that is clearly understood by any manufacturer that is familiar with the standard. \nFigure 1-1. A GD&T drawing uses standard symbols to describe a part. \nFigure 1-1 shows a side and end view of a simple part and contains many of the symbols that define the characteristics of a work-piece. Traditional drawings often contained handwritten notes that required translation for manufacturers in different countries. The GD&T symbols substitute for those notes and greatly reduce the chance of mistakes. \nGD&T represents a significant improvement over traditional dimensioning methods in describing the form, fit, and function of parts. GD&T is considered to be a mathematical language that is very precise. It describes each work piece in three “zones of tolerance” that are then described relative to the Cartesian coordinate system. \nA Little History \nThe Cartesian coordinate system was developed by Rene Descartes \n(pronounced “day-kart”), a French mathematician, philosopher & scientist. \nFigure 1-2. Rene Descartes \nDescartes (Renatus Cartesius) was born in 1596, in France, and died in 1650. During his life, he formed much of the thought about the order of things in the world and established three precepts about the method by which we should examine all things.
