WORD BOOK \nTABULATED AND EDITED BY \nGEORGE E.VANDER BEKE \nPROFESSOR OF EDUCATIONMARQUETTE UNIVERSITY \nBem Dork \nTHE MACMILLAN COMPANY \nFOREWORD \nThe need of basic curriculum material in the foreign languages,to beselected by objective methods, came to the attention of the Americanand Canadian Committees early in the course of their inquiry into modernlanguage teaching. In no field does this need make itself felt more acutelythan in that of vocabulary where glaring divergencies in grammars andtexts make it so hard to organize reading material in a progressive sequenceof difficulty and prove a serious handicap in the learning processes.Evenwhere serious attempts have been made to select words by some criteriondependent on frequency of use the field of survey has necessarily beennarrow and subjective:for the most part vocabulary choice has followedtradition or individual opinion and experience. \nThe Committee on Investigation determined, therefore,to undertakea quantitative survey of vocabulary material on a generous scale for thethree languages of major use,French,German and Spanish, and to preparelists of words in such a way as to show the rank which the native French-man,German or Spaniard assigns to them as instruments of use.Theresult of these efforts appear in Buchanan's Graded Spanish Vord Book;Morgan's German Frequency Word Book and in the French Word Bookherewith presented. \nFortunately Professor Henmon had already shown the way with thepublication of his French Word Book in 1924.This work was based on anarrower range of sources than that used in the Committee's undertaking, but the method employed in Henmon's selection of categories and in count-ing the words with the help of a coöperating group of teachers was thatfollowed in preparing the present list. The usefulness of the Henmonlist gave the Committee confidence that a suecessful task could be under-taken on a larger scale. In the summer of 1926 check lists were organizedby Professor Coleman and his assistants, texts for study selected and thehelp of a large number of teachers of French enlisted for the count.Withina year this had been completed and the Committee on Investigation wasthen so fortunate as to secure the services of Professor Vander Beke totake charge of tabulating and studying the results of the count and pre-paring the list. The problem of combining the results of the Committee'scount with the Henmon list was difficult, since the principle of range ofoccurrence, which was not canvassed in Henmon's count, had been selectedas the criterion of sequence for the present list.A solution was found, however,so that the alphabetical index list presents separately the results \nFOREWORD \nof the two counts as well as the total frequeney which they together estab-lished for the words listed. That the method of arranging the materialdiffers to some extent in the three word books published by the Com-mittees is not surprising in view of the lack of previous experiment in thisfeld.Whatever the difference of technique in presentation, all give thewords in a sequence determined by quantitative use. \nAs it stands, the list has a value which is unique. On the basis of aninvestigation of over one million running words, drawn from more thaneighty-eight sources belonging to a wide range of categories of Frenchprose, more than six thousand words are listed in an order of merit whichis absolutely objective in prineiple. In addition, the alphabetical listwidens the sweep of the investigation by nearly forty per cent throughthe inclusion of Henmon's frequencies. The value for teacher and student, for textbook maker and for those who plan the French curriculum in schooland college,is manifest to every one who examines the book. The studywas,to be sure, limited to printed material and took into consideration nospecial or qualitative criteria. The result is,however, for the field ofwritten usage the most valid list which has yet been presented. \nThe Committees desire to express their esp","cbCainMRZI8Rhvw8","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainMRZI8Rhvw8","pdf",6443738,187,"English","# INTRODUCTION\n## PART I.
