of the representative authors of thenineteenth century with a view to:(I)literary worth,  \n(2)varied style and subject-matter,(3)large vocabularyand idiomatic constructions,(4)interest for the student.In an endeavor to meet these requirements I haveprepared the present edition.  \nBefore reading these stories,the student should befamiliar with the elementary principles of French gram-mar and with the common irregular verbs.The Notes,therefore,contain few grammatical explanations.Repe-tition of rules that may be found in the ordinary gram-mars would be unnecessary,and the instructor willprobably prefer to adapt this side of the work to theneeds of the individual classes or better still to theneeds of the individual student.The body of the notesis chiefly devoted to the explanation of literary andhistorical references.A few general remarks have beenmade in connection with each author in order to pointout his place in French literature,but for detailedcriticism the found.A summaryof the more important works of each writer has alsobeen given and one or more editions indicated.  \nThe Vocabulary is large(between 60o0 and 7000words),but contains few obsolescent or dialectic expres-sions.It is hoped that it will be found to contain allthe words occurring in the text,with the exception ofmerely personal names having no English equivalentand of no signification beyond the story in which theyoccur.In a few instances words will be found in thetext with special meanings;in these cases I have givenin the vocabulary the ordinary signification as well asthe special.Mere translations have been avoided inthe notes;with the vocabulary and a knowledge of theelementary principles of French grammar,the studentshould be able to translate the text with little
