The Forest School Association defines it as “an inspirational process that offers ALL learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.” (Forest School Association 2020). It is a specialised learning approach that has the learner at the centre, whatever their age.
The Forest School helps to develop self-esteem, independence and confidence through outdoor child-led play in nature. Forest School takes a holistic approach to learning and development and offers a mixture of learning the skills of problem solving and creativity as well as some more specific bush craft style skills (e.g. knot tying, tree climbing, fire lighting and tool use). At Forest School we foster a deep connection and love of nature, through play and observations through the seasons. The children are given time and space to explore and discover things for themselves. Our sessions are child-led and designed to meet the needs of individuals to ensure that children grow in self-confidence, as well as developing their physical, emotional, cognitive and social skills.
The Forest School ethos and principles
The Forest School ethos has 6 principles (reviewed in 2011 and published by the Forest School association \u0013 HYPERLINK "https://www.forestschoolassociation.org/what-is-forest-school/" \\h \u0014https://www.forestschoolassociation.org/what-is-forest-school/\u0015) and these are:
• FS is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than a one-off or infrequent visit; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.
• FS takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
• FS uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
• FS aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
• FS offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
• FS is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice
More details about the Forest School ethos and the 6 Forest School principles can be found here:
\u0013 HYPERLINK "https://www.forestschoolassociation.org/full-principles-and-criteria-for-good-practice/" \\h \u0014https://www.forestschoolassociation.org/full-principles-and-criteria-for-good-practice/\u0015
Our aim is to advance the education, and promote the wellbeing of children in a safe, secure and stimulating outdoors environment.
Sessions that are planned around the individual’s and group’s needs, and built upon each week.
All Forest School Leaders are qualified through nationally recognised and accredited training, therefore ensuring Forest School is a high quality learning experience. Sessions will initially concentrate on safety; establishing boundaries and routines and allowing time for the children to become comfortable and confident in the setting. As the children develop in confidence and familiarity with the environment the sessions focus on developing and reinforcing skills, promoting nature connection and developing relationships within the group.
Communication with all stakeholders
We believe that communication is key. The more people know the better their understanding and safety for all involved.
School Setting:
Class Teachers -The Forest School leader is responsible for evaluating each ses","cbCaijHXohSm7ihI","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijHXohSm7ihI","docx",1518087,45,"English","# Contents Page
## Vision Statement
## Where every child is given: courage, resilience, freedom and compassion
## What is Forest School?
## The Forest School ethos and principles
## Communication with all stakeholders","[{"question":"What is Forest School and what learning model does it use?","answer":"Forest School is an inspirational learning process centered on the learner, using regular opportunities for confidence and self-esteem through hands-on experiences in a woodland or natural environment."},{"question":"How do Forest School sessions support children’s development?","answer":"Sessions develop self-esteem, independence and confidence through outdoor child-led play, and take a holistic approach that strengthens physical, emotional, cognitive and social skills."},{"question":"What are the key Forest School ethos principles?","answer":"Forest School operates as a long-term cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review; takes place in natural settings; uses learner-centred processes; promotes holistic resilient learning; supports appropriate risk; and is led by qualified practitioners who continually improve practice."}]","Forest School Handbook - Swallowfield Primary School | DOCX"]
