It outlines actions before filing, what to gather for both students and contributors, and how to handle verification, corrections, and additional school-specific paperwork like CSS Profile or institutional forms. The checklist also covers scholarship exploration, including private and state opportunities, and explains how to review and respond to financial aid offer letter packages, compare offers, and manage outside scholarships responsibly.","Financial Aid Checklist \nFollow these steps to file your FAFSA and get awarded financial aid \nBefore You File \n☐ Establish an FSA ID for the student as well as one for each contributor. A contributor is anyone who has to include personal and financial information on the FAFSA (typically parents and guardians) . \nNot sure which “parents” need to contribute to the FAFSA? Check out FSA’s Is My Parent a Contributor infographic: \n[studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/is-my-parent-a-contributor.jpg](studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/is-my-parent-a-contributor.jpg) \nAn FSA ID is a username and password that must be used to log in to certain U.S. Department of Education websites andwill be used to electronically sign the FAFSA. Create your FSAID at [studentaid.gov](studentaid.gov). \n☐ Make a list of each school the student is applying to and their financial aid deadline. These deadlines are usually clearly listed on the school’s financial aid web page. Also make note if the school requires any additional forms such as the CSS Profile or an institutional form unique to that school. \nReady to File \n☐ File the FAFSA after it opens, but no later than each school’s deadline. File the FAFSA at [studentaid.gov](studentaid.gov). \n☐ Have the following items for both the student and contributors handy when you sit down to file the FAFSA: \n• IRS Tax Return from prior prior year (i.e. 2024 Federal Tax Return for 2026-2027 FAFSA) \n• All W-2 forms \n• Balances of checking and savings accounts \n• Balances of all non-retirement investments (funds not in an IRA, 403B, 401K, or qualified annuity) such as: money \nmarkets, mutual funds, CD’s, stocks, savings bonds, 529 college savings accounts, UGMA or UTMA accounts \n• If the family owns any property(s) in addition to the home that you live in (i.e. a vacation home, rental property, camp, time share, etc.) then you need to calculate the equity (current value minus what you owe) in the extra property(s) that are not your primary residence. \n• Current value of family business or farms with more than 100 employees \n• A list of all the schools the student is applying to \n☐ If required by the school, complete and submit additional financial aid paperwork (CSS Profile and/or institutional forms) before all school deadlines. Check each school’s financial aid website to determine if additional forms are required. \n[GraniteEdvance.org](GraniteEdvance.org) (603) 225-6612 3 Barrell Court, Concord, New Hampshire 03301 \nCorrections to the Student’s FAFSA \n☐ The FAFSA Submission Summary will be sent to the student via e-mail or can be viewed online at [studentaid.gov](studentaid.gov) within three days of your submission. Review the FAFSA Submission Summary for accuracy. \n☐ If necessary, correct inaccurate items. Once corrections have been made and the form has been re-submitted, the new information will automatically be sent to the schools listed in the FAFSA. \nVerification \n☐ Verification is a process by which a college’s Financial Aid Office may request additional financial or tax information from a family. Promptly respond to any school requests for additional information or documentation as any delay can prolong the financial aid process. \nExample: Families may be asked to submit an IRS Tax Transcript or utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) found within the FAFSA form (see more below). \nScholarships \n☐ Investigate private sources of financial aid. Check with the high school, local library, businesses, and employer(s) . \n• Visit the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation ([nhcf.org](nhcf.org)) to apply for the Statewide Student Aid Program or the Career Aid for Technical Students. \n• Check out our own Granite Edvance Scholarship! Our scholarship program is open to NH residents and students pursuing a bachelor’s, associate’s, or trade program at any Title IV eligible institution.
