Perioperative nurses help plan, carry out and assess treatment for patients undergoing surgery. These RNs are involved in the care of patients before, during, and after surgery.  \nTypes of Perioperative nurses include the following:  \n􀁸 A pre-op call nurse is responsible for making pre-op phone calls to patients to review health history, including medications, any allergies, and to review specific instructions for what patients need to do prior to surgery. A pre op nurse will assess, consent and prepare a patient on the day of surgery for the surgical encounter. These nurses may be assigned to pre and post-op nursing duties in the OR as needed.  \n􀁸 A scrub nurse is sterile and is responsible for choosing and handling instrument and supplies used during surgery. Duties include setting up a sterile area in preparation for surgery, helping the surgical team with gowns and gloves, and handling instruments to the surgeon.  \n􀁸 The duties of a circulating nurse include developing a patient plan of care, reviewing preoperative assessments with patients, and managing activities in the operating room. The circulating nurse isnot sterile but is there to serve everyone involved in a surgical procedure, including the surgeon.  \n􀁸 A PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) RN cares for patients immediately after surgical proceduresand anesthesia.  \nMINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS  \nKNOWLEDGE OF:  \n􀁸 Advanced knowledge of EMRs.  \n􀁸 Working knowledge of health care laws, regulations, and nursing care methods and procedures.  \nSKILLS IN:  \n􀁸 Excellent bedside manner and communication skills.  \n􀁸 Possesses exceptional organizational and multi-tasking skills.  \n􀁸 Ability to use or learn computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, internet, e-mail, and NextGen.  \n􀁸 Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.  \n􀁸 Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.  \n􀁸 Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
