one-time colleague inGeneva,Dr.E.James Anthony,because it represents a collective effort towarda goal that today seems very necessary yet difficult to attain.This goal is thesynthesis of developmental psychology with all the other aspects of childpsychology into a science of ontogenetic development from birth to maturityencompassing three points of view—the biological,the behavioral,and theinternalization of the behavioral into mental life.  \nThis synthesis is indeed necessary since it is not possible to understand adisorder or a developmental arrest without having a sufficient knowledge ofthe ensemble of elements that has brought it about.At each level ofdevelopment,the personality of the subject attempts to integrate a multiplexsystem of factors in varying proportion,and without carefully and fullyconsidering this interdigitating whole,it is not easy to disentangle themechanisms involved in any particular functional disintegration.Similarly,thefact that child psychiatry is largely based on the principle of \"syndromes\"de-mands,as a matter of course,the inclusion of an \"analytic\"approach to theproblem being studied,not only with regard to the specific psychogenesis butalso with respect to the pathogenic processes making up the interdependent,interrelated system,since the elements of disorder share a conjoint responsi-bility for the functioning of the system as a whole.However,since there arethose who remain normal in situations where others become variouslydisturbed,the meaning of the disorder to be remedied can be extremelydiverse,and in order to grasp it,it is necessary to immerse oneself in the en-semble at the different developmental stages,the order of which is by no meansfortuitous but resembles the orderly sequence of stages
