I thought that being useful to a synagogue meant showing up a lot-whether to attend services, celebrate holidays, cook and bake, or fix walls and wax the floors. I thought that contributing meant time, money, or expertises. I never considered the most vital and basic attribute of a valuable Jewish community member: willingness to stick together. \nThe most important part a Jewish community is the willingness to stand up and be counted among its members. No matter what happens, we always stick together, and we are always proud to list our names as members of Emanuel Synagogue. \nIn Pirkei Avot (“the Ethics of Our Fathers”), Hillel taught it very succinctly: “Do not separate yourself from the community.”(Pirkei Avot 2:4) \nThe Babylonian Talmud expresses a similar idea: \n“The Sages (of the Mishnah) \ntaught: When the Jewish people is immersed in distress, and one of them separates (from the community), the two ministering angels who accompany that person come and place their hands on his/her head and say,“So-and-So, this person who has separated from the community-let this person never see the consolation of the community.” (Babylonion Talmud Taanit 11a) \nI believe that the meaning of this passage is clear: that a person who leaves the Jewish community in a time of communal distress will not be able to benefit when the community’s distress is resolved. Perhaps the“consolation of the community” -theresolution to the problem-will also not be able to help someone who leaves prematurely.
