The Meeting was attended by 33 participants from: 22 National ASFA Partners, 2 UN ASFA Partners, 2 International ASFA Partners, the ASFA Publishing Partner, and 4 observers. The Agenda is in Annex-1. The names and addresses of the participants are listed in Annex-1b. The documents presented at the Meeting and the abbreviations used in the Report are listed in Annex-1a and 1c, respectively.\nThe Meeting was opened by Mr Fred Kingston, Executive Secretary, NAFO, and Dr Bertrum MacDonald, Dean, Faculty of Management, Dalhousie University.\nMr Kingston said that NAFO was extremely pleased to be co-hosting this year’s 44th Annual Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) Advisory Board Meeting together with Dalhousie University. NAFO recognizes the important role that ASFA plays in the dissemination of information on the freshwater, brackish and marine environments, not only for its members, but also for scientists and students world-wide. The international role of NAFO as a regional fisheries organization links it to the FAO in the global fisheries management network, and as a consequence, NAFO supports ASFA. NAFO believes that ASFA provides the most comprehensive abstracting and indexing services in the aquatic and fisheries field, and Mr Kingston commented that NAFO was honoured to be participating in ASFA, which is a leader in Aquatic Science and Fisheries documentation. He informed the participants that for the past five years, NAFO has been participating in a research partnership with Dalhousie University in the Environmental Information: Use and Influence (EIUI) programme. NAFO has supported the EIUI research project, in particular their emphasis on highlighting grey literature, its role, and how that information is utilized by scientists and fisheries managers in developing policies in fisheries and aquatic environments. Mr Kingston welcomed everyone and hoped that the meeting’s goals and agenda items for the week would all be accomplished.\nDr MacDonald (Dean, Faculty of Management, Dalhousie University) welcomed everyone to Halifax on behalf of Dalhousie University. He gave a brief description of the University, saying that it was one of the oldest and most comprehensive universities of Canada and that it has a strong emphasis on ocean related research. Dr MacDonald referred to the Environmental Information: Use and Influence research programme (EIUI) that examines what happens to scientific information in public policy and decision making, in particular marine environmental information. He expressed his pleasure in co-hosting the meeting with NAFO and wished everybody an enjoyable meeting.\nADMINISTRATIVE ARRANGEMENTS\nMs Burton (NAFO) presented this Agenda Item.\nELECTION OF CHAIRPERSONS AND RAPPORTEURS\nMr Pettman (FBA) was elected Chairperson for the Meeting.
