Date: 02/28/2027 \nTotal and Permanent Disability (TPD) Discharge \nThis is an application for a TPD discharge of federal student loans you received under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loan Program), the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFEL Program), or the Federal Perkins Loan Program (Perkins Loan Program), and/or your Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant Program (TEACH Grant Program) service obligation. \nThe Direct Loan Program includes Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, and Direct Consolidation Loans. \nThe FFEL Program includes Federal Stafford Loans (both subsidized and unsubsidized), Federal PLUS Loans, Federal Consolidation Loans, and Federal Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS) . \nThe Perkins Loan Program includes Federal Perkins Loans, National Direct Student Loans (NDSL), and National Defense Student Loans (Defense Loans) . \nThe TEACH Grant Program requires individuals to complete a teaching service obligation as a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant. \nIf you receive a TPD discharge of a loan, this means that you do not have to repay the remaining balance of the loan. If you receive a TPD discharge of a Direct PLUS Loan or Federal PLUS Loan that you obtained with an endorser (an endorser is someone who agrees to repay a PLUS loan if the borrower does not repay it), the discharge also cancels the endorser’s obligation to repay the loan. \nIf you receive a TPD discharge of a TEACH Grant service obligation, this means that you are no longer required to complete the teaching service that you agreed to perform as a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant. \nREQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY FOR TPD DISCHARGE \nTo qualify for TPD discharge, you must have a total and permanent disability. You are considered to have a total and permanent disability if: \n1. You are a veteran who has been determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to be unemployable due to a service-connected disability; or \n2. You are unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that can be expected to result in death, or that has lasted for a continuous period of not less than 60 months, or that can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 60 months. \nTo show that you have a total and permanent disability, you must submit certain documentation from one of the following sources: \n1. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA); \n2. The Social Security Administration (SSA); or \n3. Certain licensed or certified medical professionals. \nThe specific types of documentation you must provide are explained in Sections 6 and 7. Except for VA or SSA determinations as described in Sections 8 and 9 , a disability determination by another federal or state agency does not qualify you for this discharge. \nNote: If you qualify for TPD discharge by providing documentation from the VA or the SSA, you are not required to have a medical professional complete Section 6 of this application. \nIMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION \nLoan amounts discharged due to TPD are not considered taxable income by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for federal tax purposes. However, some states may consider the discharged loan amount to be income for state tax purposes. If you receive a TPD discharge of a loan, check with your state tax office or a tax professional before filing your state tax return. \nWARNING/IMPORTANT: Any person who knowingly makes a false statement or misrepresentation on this form or on any accompanying document is subject to penalties that may include fines, imprisonment , or both, under the U.S. Criminal Code and 20 U.S.C. 1097. \n\n| Section 1: Return the completed form and any documentation to:\u003Cbr>U.S. Department of Educ","cbCairQ5CmDljiEf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairQ5CmDljiEf","pdf",726953,19,"English","# Requirements to Qualify for TPD Discharge\n# Documentation Needed to Prove TPD\n# Important Tax Information\n# Warning/Important Penalties\n# Submission Instructions\n## Return the completed form and documentation\n## Get help completing the form\n# Applicant Information\n# Total and Permanent Disability Information","[{\"question\":\"What does a Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) discharge do for federal student loans?\",\"answer\":\"An approved TPD discharge means you do not have to repay the remaining balance of the loan.
