It outlines feasibility checks for using pre-published booklets, selection of assessment task types, and core assessment principles covering validity, reliability, inclusivity, currency, sufficiency, manageability, and transparency. A learner assessment booklet template is included to help centres capture evidence of achievement in one structured document and support consistent assessment decisions.","An Introduction to
Developing Learner Assessment Booklets
\u000f
Contents
Why develop a learner assessment booklet
How to start
Which assessment tasks are more suitable?
Principles of assessment
Preparing written questions for assessment booklets
Incorporating combined assessments
Learner Assessment Booklet template
\u000f
Why develop a Learner Assessment Booklet
The majority of OCN NI qualifications specify that assessment is to be by a Portfolio of Evidence. OCN NI mostly designs qualifications as units of assessment that specify Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria. These qualifications require evidence of achievement of all the Learning Outcomes to be provided and a portfolio is the most effective way of providing the required evidence. In addition this method also offers centres some flexibility as it enables them to design different assessment tasks for different learner groups as long as those tasks are fit for purpose. The Portfolio of Evidence is a collection of all the assessment evidence, which must be referenced to the Assessment Criteria for the units, along with a record of the assessment decisions. This is often in the form of a loose leaf file but could be an electronic file.
A learner assessment booklet is intended to enable centres to capture and record evidence of achievement from learners in a single document rather than in a file; it is pre populated with the assessments and the references to the Assessment Criteria. In certain circumstances it can offer an effective alternative to a Portfolio of Evidence while also supporting or contributing to course delivery. For example:
Where learners are less willing or less able to compile and reference a Portfolio of Evidence without significant support from their tutor/s, assessment booklets can help ease the burden of this work on the tutor/s.
Where there are large numbers of learners and consequently many assessors, assessment booklets can be used effectively to support standardization of assessment practice.
This publication offers a brief introduction to creating learner assessment booklets and provides an assessment booklet template which you may wish to adapt to meet your needs.
You can learn more about developing learner assessment booklets by attending one of the OCN NI assessment workshops on the subject. Further information can be found on the website or from Customer Services.
\u000f
How to start
Although many units have the potential to be assessed through a pre published booklet this is not necessarily the case for all units. Therefore, in the first place you must establish how feasible it is for the units you are using to be assessed in this quite structured way. You should carefully review the learning outcomes and related assessment criteria for the units, to determine if assessment tasks can be devised which will enable all a learner’s evidence of achievement to be captured in a pre prepared document. It is essential that the professionals making these judgements are competent to make these decisions and have the necessary subject expertise.
As a guide, learning outcomes that require the demonstration of knowledge and understanding are often suited to assessment tasks which can be incorporated into an assessment booklet. In the example below the assessment tasks would probably constitute some form of questioning and the evidence of achievement would be provided by the learner.
On the other hand learning outcomes that require the demonstration of skills are usually assessed by observation or the evaluation of an artefact or product. Here the evidence of achievement would be a statement provided by the assessor and/or the product/evidence of the product. These are not particularly conducive to incorporation into an assessment booklet.
Overall however, the question of how feasible it is for an assessment booklet to be an effective option, is dependent upon the type of assessment tasks that are used to generate the evidence of achievement.
\u000f
Which","cbCaiubgWQK0sVXj","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiubgWQK0sVXj","doc",193536,13,"English","en",105,"# Contents
## Why develop a learner assessment booklet
## How to start
## Which assessment tasks are more suitable?
## Principles of assessment
## Preparing written questions for assessment booklets
## Incorporating combined assessments
## Learner Assessment Booklet template","[{"question":"Why are learner assessment booklets useful for OCN NI qualifications?","answer":"OCN NI qualifications often require evidence mapped to Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria.
