Department’s Overall Assessment of the Review Committee Report \nWe thank the review committee for their interesting suggestions and significant investment of time. It is always helpful to engage in serious reflection about a program, a necessary prerequisite of preparing a self-study report, and receive fresh perspectives. Our 10-year review of the entire department produced an especially large amount of material to consider as does the reviewers’ detailed report. The process has already stimulated discussion of initiatives that in some cases will extend many years. \nIn general, we agree with the committee’s suggestions about areas to examine though not always their specific recommendations, which we feel lean to the bureaucratic side. For example, we appreciate their comments about the physical condition of the Stewart Biology Building but want to add that the problem is not limited to one of communication (while acknowledging physical problems the committee’s recommendations focus on communication). Indeed, as of this date (Aug 10, 2023), due to another water problem building occupants have not had access to the 8th floor lobby for two months. Among other things, this significantly complicates elevator and bathroom access. \nAnother example concerns department governance, with recommendations that seem based more on the values of the reviewers’home departments such as the taking of formal staff meeting minutes. The committee leaves little doubt of their opinion on this matter, e.g.“The members of the review committee were surprised to learn that minutes are not taken at department meetings, nor are votes held on departmental issues. This is clearly problematic …”. (p. 13) . \nHowever, there is more nuance to this issue than captured in the report which also overlooks one fact that was pointed out on several occasions, including after the department’s receipt of a draft of the site visit report. As discussed in the self-study (p. 39), the “The department has a long tradition of being a collegial, non-bureaucratic, non-hierarchical, and autonomy-supportive environment” that prides itself on providing an atmosphere conducive to the free expression of ideas. Historically, one aspect of this has been resistance to the taking of formal minutes during staff meetings that might allow, for example, identification of speakers with unpopular ideas. In their report (p. 3), the review committee notes evidence that, overall, this approach is working, e.g.,“The working environment within the department generally appears collegial. Faculty members seem to get along well. Junior faculty appear to feel supported and faculty and support staff seem to respect and value each other”. \nAt the same time – something that the committee did not note – the informal atmosphere does not preclude documentation of \ndepartment activities. As described in the self-study (p. 40) for the last two years the Chair has circulated notes following each staff \nmeeting covering topics discussed, decisions made, etc. While a newsletter format rather than formal minutes, reaction to this compromise solution has been positive and discussions in the Executive Committee and elsewhere have revealed no consensus for something more formal. \nThis is not intended to discount the reviewers’ opinions about this or other topics. In fact, the Executive Committee has already begun to discuss possible changes consistent with the spirit and goals of the department such as a significant readjustment of teaching to increase the availability of smaller undergraduate classes. The linchpin of this developing plan is the hiring of several faculty lecturers.
