CUSTOMIZABLE VISUALIZATIONS WITHFORMULA-LINKED BUILDING BLOCKS\n\nMohammad A.Kuhail and Soren Lauesen \nSofiware Development Group,IT University of Copenhagen,Rued Langgaards Vej 7,Copenhagen,Denmark \nKeywords: Visualizations,Building Blocks,Customizability,Spreadsheet-like Formulas. \nAbstract:One approach to visualization construction is to use complex blocks (widgets)that are tailored for specificvisualizations, and customize the visualizations by setting the properties of the widgets. This approachallows fast and easy visualization construction but falls short if the user wants different appearance orbehaviour than what the widgets support.Another approach is to combine primitive graphical elementsusing traditional programming or visualization toolkits.Traditional programming allows highcustomizability, but it is time consuming and hard to develop advanced visualizations.Visualization toolkitsallow easier visualization creation in some cases, but customization and interaction are tedious. As analternative,we developed uVis visualization tool that uses spreadsheet-like formulas to connect buildingblocks.uVis formulas can refer to building blocks and database tables. We created several advancedvisualizations, and compared our approach against others.Evaluation shows that our approach improvedcustomizability. \nrequired to have a solid programming background toobtain high customization or interactivity. \n## 1 INTRODUCTION\n\nTo achieve a high level of customization, avisualization needs to broken into basic buildingblocks whose properties can depend on data.Hence,we developed uVis,a tool with customizablebuilding blocks suited for visualization construction. These blocks have properties, events, and functions, and can create local data tables. \nVisualizations show data by size, color, shape, andorientation. As users view and interact withvisualizations, they analyze data and derive insightsuch as patterns, trends, clusters, and outliers(Spense,2007);(Meirelle,2011).The exploratorynature of data analysis requires that visualizationssupport users in finding their way through data byinteracting with the visualization elements(Stolteand Hanrahan,2000).Ideally,every visual elementthat makes the visualization is able to displayinformation when needed and disappear whenunneeded on user command(Ware,2004). \nWe constructed several advanced visualizationsusing basic building blocks linked by spreadsheet-like formulas. To further speed up the developmentwithout sacrificing customizability,we designedcomposite blocks that generate and link several basicblocks that are still customizable. \nSome visualization widgets allow easy and quickvisualization creation but do not support thecustomization of each individual building block. Some low-level Graphics APIs together withtraditional programming allow the customization ofindividual building blocks. However, this could betedious and time consuming. Moreover, thisapproach is not accessible to designers, visualizationcreators with limited IT skills. \nTo evaluate our approach,we created a customvisualization with uVis and a popular visualizationtool, and compared customizability. \n## 2 SOLUTION\n\nThe main goal of our solution is to support designerswith limited IT skills to design customizablevisualizations. To increase designer productivity, wewanted to combine the convenience of widgets andthe customizability of basic blocks.Further,we \nSome visualization toolkits such as prefuse andProtovis provide useful abstractions forvisualization, but they do not support easy access torelational data, and visualization creators are \nwanted to support the visualization of relationaldata. To meet all these goals,we developed uVisbuilding blocks and formulas. The building blocksare the visual elements that make up thevisualization, and based on data, the formulascustomize the appearance and behaviour of theblocks.
