This activity can help your team generate new strategies and collaboratively prioritize them. The Creative Matrix is a useful activity after conducting a problem tree analysis, an activity to brainstorm root causes. If your team does both activities, complete the problem tree analysis first, which will help your team build a shared understanding of the root causes, and then use the Creative Matrix to brainstorm targeted strategies that address one of your root causes. \nGoals of the Creative Matrix and Prioritization Activity \n/ Brainstorm strategies to address a prioritized root cause of your challenge \n/ Prioritize strategies to inform which strategy you will use to address your challenge \nMaterials for the Virtual * Creative Matrix and Prioritization Activity \n/ Creative Matrix and Prioritization Google Slides template \nDirections to Complete Your Creative Matrix and Prioritization Activity Creative Matrix: Generate possible strategies to address a challenge \n1. Generate two “How might we…”(HMW) questions to focus your brainstorming. An HMW question should encourage ambitious thinking but should be specific enough to provide parameters foryour brainstorming. If you completed the problem tree analysis, the root causes that your team identified as most important or influential should inspire your HMW questions. If you did not complete the problem tree analysis, consider root causes when crafting your HMW questions. \na. Example challenge: An estimated 40 percent of eligible participants do not use Center services. \nb. Root cause: We determined that one root cause is lack of awareness about the Center’s services. \nc. HMW question: How might we ensure that eligible participants are aware of the Center’s services? \n* You can adapt this activity for an in-person meeting by using a large poster or whiteboard for the matrix table,“How might we…” questions, and category names. Use two different colors of sticky notes for each column in the matrix. Have team members post their sticky notes on the poster or whiteboard in a similar arrangement to the Creative Matrix and Prioritization Google Slides template. \n2. Designate up to five categories of supports (blue text boxes along the left side of the slide) that will support your brainstorming. These categories could be tools or processes that could address a challenge. Often, it is beneficial to use general categories that relate to your HMW questions. Common categories include partnerships, technology, training, incentives, or policies. It’s helpful to include a wild card category to capture any ideas that don’t fit into the other categories. \n3. Start by focusing on the first HMW question on the left side of the slide. Each teammate brainstorms as many strategies as possible to address this question (one strategy per yellow sticky note) . Encourage participants to write down all ideas, regardless of how realistic they seem. The goal of the Creative Matrix is to identify a large number of ideas. You will assess the quality of the ideas later. It is also fine if team members duplicate ideas, as you can group them later. Team members can offer ideas in any category but should consider all categories during the brainstorm period. Set a time limit of five minutes per question for this silent brainstorm. \n4. Follow the same process, focusing on the second HMW question. Each teammate brainstorms as many strategies as possible to address this question (one solution per pink sticky note) . Teammates can offer ideas in any category but should consider all categories during the brainstorm period. Again, set a time limit of five minutes for this silent brainstorm. \nPrioritization: Choose a strategy to try \n1.
