It provides writing tips such as using consistent verb tenses, choosing specific action verbs, avoiding weak or generic phrasing, and removing slang, jargon, and filler words. It also details formatting guidance, including layout simplicity, bullet-point standards, acronym usage, page-count expectations, and a submission-ready proofreading check-off list.","CRAFTING A STRONG RESUME \nYour resume is a document that outlines your experiences-professional, academic, co-curricular-and the skills you have acquired as a result. \nBe sure to think of your resume as an advertisement for yourself, i.e. a strong resume should demonstrate your excellent written communication skills and make the reader want to interview you. \nTIPS FOR WRITING YOUR RESUME \nConvey your overall competence through content. \n• Be attentive to detail. Proofread carefully to ensure correct spelling and grammar. \nAvoid the use of first and third person pronouns, such as “I,” “he,” or “she.” \n• Keep verb tenses consistent throughout. Use present tense for current activities and employment. \n• Use past tense for activities and employment not presently held. \nUse action verbs and concise statements to articulate your relevant experiences. \n• Phrases like “Responsible for… “or “Market research…” or “Poster presentation” are not action words and should not begin your bullet points. \n• Words like “helped” or “worked” are weak verbs and not action oriented enough and should be avoided. Use verbs that are more specific rather than generic. \n• Avoid using each verb or adjective more than once. \n• List of action verbs is provided in this packet. \nRefrain from using slang, jargon, overused expressions, or anything that might confuse the reader. \n• Spell out all acronyms the first time they are used, followed by the acronym in parentheses. \n• Thereafter, in the same document you may use the acronym alone. \n• Try not to use filler words like “successfully, effectively, independently, etc. They pad bullet points without \nadding substance. For example,“Successfully completed all assignments” is just a puffed up version of \n“Completed all assignments.” \nGet your resume reviewed \n• Have your resume reviewed multiple times? This gives you varied insight and multiple perspectives. The Wackerle provides opportunities to have your resume reviewed. \n• Faculty, academic advisors, family and friends can also provide good insight. \nFORMATTING YOUR RESUME \nAvoid stock resume templates that come with MS Word or other applications. \n• These templates use unconventional design elements – colors, images, layouts, and text formatting and tend to lock you into a structure – section headings and the way they are ordered – that doesn’t put your background in the best light. \n• People who read a lot of resumes prefer a simple layout because it’s easier for them to navigate and find the information that matters to them most. \n• Using a template risks sending the wrong message to your reader – that you can’t be bothered, or manage your time, or learn how to use MS Word well enough to create it yourself. \nFor creative resumes such as graphic design… \n• It is recommended to have two versions of your resume, one with a conventional design and layout (used when applying to (ATS) Applicant Tracking Systems) and one that is more creative (when you know you are not applying through ATS) . \nNumber of pages \n• One page is the norm for most industries and job functions \n• Note the following exceptions: resumes targeted for Health, Research, Education, and Social Services are allowed to be two pages. \n• Make sure there are no blank pages at the end of your original document. \nBullet Points \n• Use standard black-dot bullets for describing your experience, and use them consistently. \n• Bullets should not be used when listing an organization or position, only for describing your experience within the role and organization. \n• Bullets should be indented the same amount in all sections and line up vertically. \nRESUME CHECK-OFF LIST \nBefore submitting your resume to anyone, utilize this checkoff list. Proofreading is essential. Read every line out loud during final proofreading stages. \nOverall Appearance \n\n| 􀂉 Name appropriate size – not too small and not too large (i.e. size 18-24)\u003Cbr>􀂉 Consistent formatting (aligned tabs; commo","cbCair48J4XdNIhy","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCair48J4XdNIhy","pdf",923636,9,31,"English","en",105,"# Crafting a Strong Resume\n## Tips for Writing Your Resume\n## Formatting Your Resume\n## Resume Check-off List","[{\"question\":\"What should a strong resume communicate to the reader?\",\"answer\":\"A strong resume communicates overall competence through well-structured content and demonstrates excellent written communication skills that encourage an interview.\"},{\"question\":\"Which tense should be used in resume descriptions?\",\"answer\":\"Use present tense for current activities and employment, and past tense for activities and employment not presently held.\"},{\"question\":\"What formatting and layout practices are recommended?\",\"answer\":\"Avoid complex stock templates, use a simple layout, apply consistent bullet formatting, and keep spacing, fonts, and date formats uniform.
