Exceptions include:\nA personal cloth face covering may be worn to and from the parking lot at the beginning and end of each shift.\nAn FR rated cloth face covering approved by OHS may be used for work on or near energized equipment.\nSA-EP-210-6, (Appendix D) is required prior to issuing N95 masks for COVID-19 for voluntary use. LMS Admins can assign LMS Code PRR-APPENDIXD-EP-W, Appendix D: Voluntary Use of Respirators in the Workplace Read and Sign.\nSurgical masks should be issued before N95/ KN95 masks when using to contain respiratory droplets.\nN95 / KN95 masks that are within their expiration date should be utilized first. If that population is depleted, then the supply of expired masks should be utilized until new masks arrive.\nConsideration should be given to conserving supplies for potential critical / min staffing situations (i.e., Critical Personnel Staff).\nThe most effective personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent infection with COVID-19 are clear plastic face shields, N95 type face masks, and medical-grade surgical masks. Face shields are an effective way to protect against the spread of droplet-borne viruses like coronavirus. They can be cleaned and re-used and are more comfortable to wear than face masks (Ref. April 3, 2020 Publication | Hans Kellner | Board of Health, Philadelphia Fire Department, Department of Public Health).\nSurgical / procedure / KN95 / N95 masks or face shields are all considered to provide greater protection than a cloth face covering.\nFace shields protect the wearer by “blocking” respiratory droplets (droplet nuclei) that can be exhaled by someone in close proximity. They provide more protection to the mucus membranes of your face where you might be getting infected. They can be easily cleaned and reused. In addition, for many people they are more comfortable to use than breathing through a mask, particularly in warm environments, and they also prevent the wearer from touching their eyes, nose and mouth, which is the most common method of transmission. (Ref 1, 2, and 3)\nFace shields should cover the eyes, nose and mouth.\nSurgical / procedure / KN95 / N95 masks protect others in close proximity by “containing” respiratory droplets from being expelled by the mask wearer\nThe Pennsylvania Department of Health has ruled that face shields they can be used instead of masks (i.e., the state’s “Universal Face Coverings Order” provides options that “include a plastic face shield that covers the nose and mouth.”)\nThe State of Maryland (via Executive Order 20-07-29-01) has ruled that plastic face shields may be used to reduce the spread of COVID-19.\nReferences:\nApril 3, 2020 Publication | Hans Kellner | Board of Health, Philadelphia Fire Department, Department of Public Health).\nJuly 23, 2020 AARP Publication / Are Face Shields Better Than Masks for Coronavirus Protection? / by Renée Bacher and Christina Lanzito\nMay 5, 2020 Publication / Universal Face Shields: A Better Option for COVID-19 Containment? / Alexandra Ward\nOHS COVID-19 Approved FR Face Coverings","cbCaisj8exlubT2o","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisj8exlubT2o","docx",380578,"English","# PPE selection guidance\n## Mask vs face shield protection\n## Issuing rules and exceptions\n## Prioritization of N95/KN95 supplies\n## References","[{\"question\":\"When can a cloth face covering be used instead of company-issued PPE?\",\"answer\":\"Cloth face coverings are not allowed as a substitute when a mask or face shield is required, except for wearing one to and from the parking lot at shift start/end.
