Your cover letter (along with your résumé, references, and other additional documents) is a vital component of your application correspondence. Unless explicitly told not to send a cover letter, consider sending one to strengthen your application. \nCover Letter Fundamentals \n1. Tailor: \n• An effective cover letter is tailored to a particular position to which you are applying \n• Write a unique cover letter for each position-this requires researching the organization for the position you are applying \n• The cover letter should clarify for the employer why you are the right person for the position \n• If you’re applying for a mission-based or non-profit organization consider explaining in your cover letter why you support the mission of the organization with possible examples \n2. Specify: \n• Use the cover letter to highlight a few things about your experience and background that speak to your interest in and qualification for this position \n• Highlight 2-3 qualities the employer is seeking and address these qualities and experience in your cover letter \n• Provide specific examples that reflect what the employer is seeking \n3. Tone: \n• The tone of the letter should be professional \n• Don’t be afraid to show your enthusiasm about this position and the organization \n• Don’t just focus on what you can gain from this position, but also talk about what you can contribute \n4. Writing Style: \n• When writing your cover letter make sure that you have varied your sentence structure; for example, do not start all your sentences with “I” \n• Make sure that there are no typos or errors \nCover Letter Structure \nYour Contact Information: \n• Your contact information should be listed at the top of the page \n• Be sure to include your email address and phone number, you may also include your address, city, state, and zip if you choose \n• After your contact info, leave one blank line, and then type the date \nEmployer’s Contact Information: \n• Following the date, leave another blank line, and then type the employer’s contact information \n• Include: name, title, organization, name, and address of the employer \nSalutation: \n• Address your letter to a specific individual, if at all possible \n• If not obviously listed, try looking at the employer’s website to find the proper contact person or call the organization to find out who to address it to \n• Use the appropriate title (i.e.“Ms.”,“Mr.”,“Dr.”) . If known use the individuals full name (i.e.“Dear Chris Smith) \n• If finding the specific individual proves impossible, use a more generic salutation (i.e.“Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Hiring Committee”) \nFirst Paragraph: \n• Use the first paragraph to introduce yourself and explain why you are writing \n• Make it clear what position you’re applying for, and state how you learned of the opening, and include a specific connection you wish to highlight \n• Convey enthusiasm about the organization and the position, sharing any particular reasons that you are excited about the organizations \nExample sentence in first pargraph: \n“I will graduate from Carleton College with a major in art history in June, and am eager to apply my education and arts management experience as I begin my career in the arts.” \nMiddle Paragraph(s): \n• Use this space to go into more depth regarding a few highlights from your résumé most relevant to the position in which you are applying \n• Make the case of why you are the best person for this position \n• Reference qualities listed in the position description, explain how you have demonstrated and developed these qualities yourself \n• Point to any particular achievements or accomplishments of yours that are particularly applicable to the position \n• Feel free to ","cbCaisMCOtdsJdCw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisMCOtdsJdCw","pdf",183670,9,"English","# Cover Letter Fundamentals\n## Tailor\n## Specify\n## Tone\n## Writing Style\n# Cover Letter Structure\n## Your Contact Information\n## Employer’s Contact Information\n## Salutation\n## First Paragraph\n## Middle Paragraph(s)\n## Closing Paragraph\n## Signature\n# Cover Letter Examples","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of a cover letter in a job application?\",\"answer\":\"A cover letter introduces you to a prospective employer and strengthens your application correspondence alongside your résumé and other materials.
