We will address decisions that are: (i) central to the survival and performance of companies; and (ii) primary in terms of the ability of companies to create value for suppliers of capital. This course provides education for the purpose of judgment.\nThis course subsumes and replaces Finance 4210 for qualified finance majors who want in-depth focus on topics related to the valuation of companies and the associated strategic and tactical decisions that matter for valuation. Students who qualify to participate are almost all honors students, though some others do manage to obtain special permission.\nThe course requires students to apply concepts, principles, and analytical methods from corporate finance in a comprehensive manner. In many instances, significant outside research and review will be required when analyzing the cases and problem sets. In this respect and others, the intention is to provide students with experiences similar to those faced in the workplace by investment bankers, asset managers, investors, portfolio managers, consultants, and corporate managers, where information and data are often imperfect and incomplete. A primary goal of the course is to provide students with a framework that will allow them to enhance their ability to analyze complex, real-world financial problems and to become proficient in techniques used in valuation of real and financial assets.\nThe goal of this course is to provide students with the following competencies upon successful completion of Finance 5031. Of course, your proficiency in these skills will largely depend on the time and effort that you, individually, dedicate to the class.\nEvaluate the information in accounting statements. Assess the financial strengths and weaknesses of a firm and evaluate how the firm arrived at its present financial condition.\nProject a firm's future financial condition under varying scenarios and, given these projections, assess various operating and financial strategies. Provide sensible solutions to issues associated with short-term financial management.\nComprehend the essential aspects of market efficiency, risk and return, and simple asset pricing models.\nCommand the primary aspects of various investment strategies.\nUnderstand the factors involved in designing the firm's capital structure and how to determine the company and/or project cost of capital.\nConduct sophisticated valuation and capital budgeting analyses.\nCalculate expected cash flows using various methods, including probability trees and the bottoms-up approach.\nEstablish the (market) value of a going concern using various approaches, including comparables/multiples, the various methods based on discounted cash flows (WACC, FTE, APV, CCF, etc.), and real options.\nUnderstand the basic derivative securities. Understand the intuition of the real options approach to valuation and managing projects for value.\nEvaluate merger and acquisition opportunities.\nEvaluate leveraged buyout opportunities.\nUnderstand how financial decisions interact with the decisions made in other functional areas of the business, e.g., corporate strategy, marketing, production/operations management, etc.\nObviously, given this lengthy list of learning objectives, this course is ambitious. Fortunately, your prior courses in finance, accounting, decision analysis, statistics, economics, marketing, information systems, and management provide a solid foundation.\nBecause this course covers a large amount of material in a short time, it is extremely difficult for you to recover if you fall behind.\nThe course will use many previously introduced concepts from finance, financial accounting, and statistics courses. We will spend only limited class time reviewing concept","cbCaipR4BeSHfkX7","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipR4BeSHfkX7","docx",288322,"English","# Course Overview\n## Learning Objectives and Competencies\n## Course Requirements and Preparation","[{\"question\":\"What is the main learning focus of Honors Valuation (Finance 5031)?\",\"answer\":\"The course focuses on building judgment through case-based analysis of financial, strategic, and operational decisions and how they interact to create value.\"},{\"question\":\"What kinds of skills will students develop?\",\"answer\":\"Students evaluate financial statements, forecast future conditions under scenarios, assess operating and financial strategies, and perform valuation and capital budgeting analyses, including discounted cash flow and real-options approaches.\"},{\"question\":\"What is required to succeed in the course?\",\"answer\":\"Students must apply corporate finance concepts comprehensively and expect substantial outside preparation, including significant time for thorough case analysis and external research.\"}]","COURSE DESCRIPTION - Honors Valuation (Finance 5031) | DOCX",6]
