The previous sentence is such a statement. -David Friedman Friedman Freedom of Payment is a subject many Internet communities have struggled with over the past two decades. Cryptocurrency and blockchain communities , a large part of their Raisan D' Eter , are particularly ready to value freedom of expression and yet the very rapid development of these communities over the past few years and the very high financial and social stake involved have repeatedly tested the limits of application and concept. In this post , I want to separate some contradictions and make a case for which the principle of free expression is really there. Freedom of expression laws versus freedom of expression are common , and in my own view , the argument I often hear is that freedom of expression is only a legal restriction on what governments can work against and they have nothing to say about the actions of private institutions like corporations , private property platforms , internet forums and conferences. A major example of private censorship in cryptocurrency communities/ r/bitcoin sub-credit ,Themos , the administrator , decided to start heavily moded at a ll thereedit , forbid arguments in favour of increasing bitcoin blockchain's transaction ability through strict erasing. Here's a timeline of censorship as cataloged by John Balakhe: john blocke/a-brief-and incomplete-history-of-censorship-in-R bitcoin-c85a290fe 43 Here's the position of Themos defending their policies: in which the now infamous line if 90% / r/bitcoin users find these policies unbearable , then I want 90% of /r/bitcoin users to leave. A common strategy used by the people who protected the censorship of Themos was that the moderate with heavy hands is fine because / r/bitcoin is a private forum owned by Themos , and therefore has the right to do whatever he wants; those who dislike it should go to other forums: and it is true that Themos has not broken any law by moderating his forum in this way. But for most people , it is clear that there is still some kind of freedom of expression violation. What does that give? First of all , it is important to recognize that freedom of speech is not just a law in some countries. This is also a social principle. And the primary purpose of social principle is what is the primary purpose of the law: to promote an environment where winning ideas are good , rather than just promoting ideas that people in a position of power favour. And government power is not just the kind of power we need to protect. One has the power to fire one , also a corporation The power of the forum moderator to delete almost every post in the discussion thread , and many other types of power hard and soft. So w hat is the basic social principle here? Elyyzer Yudkofsky reference: There are very few injunctions in human art of rationality , including , and , but , or escape clauses. This is one of them. Bad argument is found counter argument. The bullet does not go. Ever. Sometimes not. SlatestarCodex describes in detail: What does the pill mean in the above quote? Are other progitals covered? Arrow? The bolder was launched from Atah? What about the melli weapons like words or mes? Where do we actually draw the line for inappropriate answers to the argument? The good answer to the argument is one that addresses an idea; a bad argument is what silences it. If you try to solve an idea , your success depends on how good the idea is; if you try to silence it , your success depends on how powerful you are and how many pitch forks and trembes you can provide at short notice. Pill pill is a good way to silence without solving an idea. Similarly , stones are raining from the canes or opening people with words or collecting the pitch-fork crowd. But trying to get someone out of a job for care is also a way to sukut it without solving any idea.
